LOTR SBG was my gateway drug to wargames, i would love to play war of the ring but cash is low.
Sadly they can't make a Silmarillion expansion because the tolkien ip wont let them

Same, 1st LOTR and than 40k, and soon Fantasy.
They should offer people to look at LOTR if there new to playing, not the other 2 because they should spend cheap on LOTR to see if they like it and if so than move to the other 2!

I think it probably has something to do with the lack of promotion by GW... while stores and such push 40k and fantasy alot, they seem to barely even push any LOTR, which is sad... the skirmish game is a lot of fun, and has a pretty elegant system, and the WOTR rules are probably my favorite rules system of all... so the honest answer is I don't really know... lol

Because the game system is simplistic to the point of boring the players. Also the models came as one piece plastic snip-offs when they were released, and probably still do. Automatically Appended Next Post: Gutsnagga wrote:They should so make a Silmarillion expansion for LOTR! Epic!
It would be like adding vanilla flavored sauce to a bowl of vanilla ice cream! I read the entire book before throwing it out, just so I could honestly say it actually WAS that boring.

I feel this way about a lot of games. That doesn't mean it's true all the time
and for all people. It's just my opinion. It might be true in your area. But there
are still people who enjoy the game(s) for what they are: re-creations of tolkien.
Also the models came as one piece plastic snip-offs when they were released, and probably still do.
It's not a conversion heavy type line. It's what-you-see-is-what-you-get in its
purest form. Clearly, you dislike this type of thing, and that's fine. But there
are people in the hobby who can appreciate the miniatures line. They don't want/
need to make everything poseable, and the kits come with enough variety
that it's not really necessary to pose things anyway. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ordo Dakka wrote:It would be like adding vanilla flavored sauce to a bowl of vanilla ice cream! I read the entire book before throwing it out, just so I could honestly say it actually WAS that boring.
Nah. You just take the stuff that can be interpreted as battles and make
miniatures for them. If they're good looking miniatures, then you've made
something good. If they're yucky miniatures, well...

I personaly am realy in to lotrs because you get a certain amount of freedom to do what you like (by the by I must say I'm in to skirmishing games more than moveing tray games) and anything can happen.
1 warrior can hold of 3 enemy and change the corse of a battle or 1 archer can sit and snip at random targets and so be a real pain, my brother dose not like it because of the heros but I think that improves it and am all for more lotrs games.
We tend to play around 500 pts but am hopeing we can make it to 1000 pts this time round.

It comes down to GW actively pushing LOTR or just having it because it still brings in the cash, just not as much as 40k. I love WOTR but in almost a year and a half have had only one game. GW came out with a supplement book in May that looked great for newer formations but I haven't found anyone to play it with.
It seems that we must be our own promotors if we want to get a game in. You should've seen the look on the local GW manager's face when I walked in, bought the Battlehosts supplement, a box of Galadhrim knights and a box of Knights of Dol Amroth. He asked when I'd come in to play some WOTR, obviously to help generate buzz about it. I asked how many players there were and he responded "not very many but if you have a fully painted force and come in more people would be interested." That may be true.
I'd dearly love to get a game in without some spezz mareeens spewing kid wanting to play 40k.

I wanted to get into Lord of the Rings, so I spoke to the guys at my Gaming Club at it, but nobody seemed interested. It's a shame, because now there's really no opportunity for me to play Lord of the Rings, because like you've said, nobody comes into Games Workshop and says 'Anyone up for LotR?'. The Models are still fantastic. I was going to do Harad Cavalry as an Army, but even though I can't now, I might just pick up a few Boxed Sets to Build, Paint and sit on display.

LOTR was my gateway to 40k and fantasy. Its a fun skirmish game, but combats drag on forever, especially easterlings vs warriors of minas tirith (no one dies). Heros can also tip the balance to the point of absurdity. I once had Faramir solo an entire horde of orcs, it was crazy.
I also hate to say it but compared to WHFB and 40k Tolkien's world is boring. The fluff for 40k and fantasy is so audacious compared to LOTR that its awesome. Tolkien's world is amazingly unique but lacks that something that GW's worlds have, its all too neat and tidy.

LOTR represents medieval middle earth
WHFB represents a Fantasy Renaissance
and 40k represents sci fi future
IMHO
Tolkien's world is highly developed but in real life terms it is not getting any bigger. while on the other hand FB and 40K are constantly being updated and the backstory (although it never actually progresses) has novels being written about it; so it is expanding. if LOTR received new stories every couple of months it would be better received because you could be playing new battles
*yes i know that helms deep was not invaded by haradrim but; but who knows what happened during the fourth age?*
Tolkien's world is massive, you just have to look past the actual novels.

I like LOTR, I am now doing a Mordor/ Morranon army. There used to be a lot of LOTR gamers over at my local GW. My pal, who I convinced into the hobby, only plays LOTR (and the occasional Necromunda). He used to play at the GW, but then switched to a FLGS because all the rest who played were little children, and were copying my pal's armies after they played him. At that FLGS, there are a lot more experienced LOTR players who participate in tournaments. My pal also does that, and has ended up 1st of Belgium in LOTR tournaments.

Feforfar wrote:I got Balrog, and is he painted and you ever used one?
Not painted, haven't got around to it, but have used him in games before. (I have never lost a single game against either of my brothers, except for the time when I was bored of winning and went super easy on one of them)
He is almost unbeatable, I have only seen him die once in a game.
