If you're concerned about scales and whatnot on lizards, why not dress them up in barding or caparisons? As a tangentially related example, I'll post some of my crappy old artwork, albeit more feathers than scales, and still leaning towards the AHMAHGAWD DYNOZAWRS that you're trying to avoid:
