I'm surprised the Inquisition/Ordo malleus hasn't begun a witch hunt at this point....they're basically a renegade chapter of chaos marines.

Well seeing as he has chosen to butcher the relicitors chapter they have already been declared Excommunicate Traitoris at this point

Maybe just some renegades that will do anything to survive. They don't worship khorne or any other god but they will use their weapons on occasion to help them escape the Inq. and will trick cults(Both Chaos and Imperial) into helping them.

its the tainted thing that is the problem in my eyes, the relictors have spent a long time training in the use of and in the recognision of chaos items, that is why only the most well trained and strong minded individuals (after long meditation preparation) use these items. so the only way they are gonna get suddenly chaos mariney is if your warband has turned away from the emperor.

a better fit for your theme (which i guess from you past thread is that you have a load of khrone bezerkers models) would be:

a company from a non-canon chapter (with no real combat experiance against chaos) finding a weapon/relic (that turns out to be khronate) after destroying a non chaos enemy, they then take it back to their cruiser as a trophy.

unfortunetly the bloodshed of the battle had awakened the relic, at which point it starts to whisper ideas into the captains head, who at the time was meditating. he mistook these as the divine voice of the emperor (the devil who uses the word of god is the most dangerous of them all etc).

upon this revelation he saids word to his chapter that he has had a vision and that he must lead a crusade. from that point on the company is damned, the more they fight against the enemies of the IoM the stronger the relic gets and the more power it has over the captain and his marines.

the marines cannot see the slow progression they are on, they start to alter their PA so it is can become its own weapon in CC, spikes and barbs running over its contors. they become more and more CC orientated (in the belief that it was all to show the glory of the IoM, mighty warrior gods that are unstoppable etc).

now you can stop there or you can have them after they have fully turned,

the captain finally succumbs to the relic and wears/wields it in battle, the company is not in the grip of khrone.

^ I like that idea, it works. We see the slow corruption of the Chapter, and it explains why they'd go all "BURN MAIM KILL"...

I like it too! Thing is I suck at writing fluff and i'd be afraid i'd screw up more... But i'll keep posting ideas when I get them and we'll see what happens.

I always feel that if you are gonna do something drastic the best idea is to start with a blank slate, use a non-canon chapter or a company from one.

Then set out the ground rules, using the codex astrates as a template and the literatre on how marines and chapters are formed. once you have that you can fluff up, as it were and pad out their history.

Lexicanum is the best bet for fluff (just remember that if it doesn't have a reference it could just be a fanboy page), type in space marine and from there you can navigate round the history, organisation and production of them.

Old codexes of ebay are also good, the one with the crimson fists on the cover has some good fluff in it

They're slowing being lured to chaos, however i'm not sure whether that makes the traitor or loyal. I have yet to decide whether they have been branded Heretics.

If you want to be good at fluff you have to read fluff so you can know how the 40k universe works.
the best bet is use that as a base and click on the links in the page and spread out.

In the Grim darkness of the forty-first millenium, there is no such thing as moderation.

I think if they're being lured to Chaos, and are at the point and wearing Chaos wargear and bringing possessed marines along for the ride, they'd be branded as heretics by the Inquisition and have gone Chaos by now.

Also, opening lexicanum, and just diving in starting from the space marines page, and focusing on pages about their basic structure, you can learn A LOT about the fluff of 40k.
