So whats the view on raveners?

would a squad like this be effective?

2 units of:
4 Raveners - Deathspitters, Rending claws 180pts

Total: 360pts

Are rending claws recommended for them? what tactics would you guys use?

Raveners should only have rending claws because they're beasts, which have fleet as standard. You don't want to stop and shoot, you want to get into assault a.s.a.p and best bit is they have upto a 24" assault range

Ah that makes sense, what would be a good number of raveners to make them effective? how well would 5 raveners with rending claws do?

Also is deep striking them worth it? or is it better just to run them?

@Gibbsey: Generally speaking...if you have multiple high threat units on the field like Tyrannofex, Carnifex, Trygon, and Hive Tyrant then you can run the Raveners on the field to be assured a turn 2 assault at the latest.

If you have a very hordey list where it's easy to pick out models to shoot at and there isn't much target saturation I would suggest reserving them so they don't die before fulfilling their purpose.

Competitive lists for Tyranids from what I've learned should try to maximize target saturation in threats. Run a bunch of big threats to make it harder for the opponent to knock down. Like the ones I mentioned above and also Tervigons, large groups of Stealers infiltrating or large Gargoyle Broods.

For me at least 1 Tervigon is a must in any list I create. Their Catalyst is so amazing for 15 points and can be used in combat. I don't normally spam these though and usually only run 1-2 so I can have points for other threats.

Don't underestimate 10x Devilgant squads. They are amazing as well. 30 shots is a solid amount of anti-infantry fire for 100 points.

As for Carnifex's I haven't really ran them very much yet but I am planning to start testing out Dakkafex's. Also going to start testing out a Rupture Cannon Tyrannofex soon...
