That is good.

Campaign games - I love DM'ing campaigns for my friends, or previously when I was working in a store. Having someone come up to me and tell me they really enjoyed it, or the fervour as they desperately try and save their guys or win a close game. I suppose it's the closest I will ever come to directing a movie, and it's great for me to help other peoples enjoyment of the game in this way.

Saturday, she tells me, "Sean said I have to give you this," and she unwraps an handkercheif to reveal an Orc Boy with shield & spear that he's assembled and painted from the box. It was his favorite from the set, and he wanted me to have it.
For an 11 year old's first attempt at modeling and painting, it's fantastic. If has a place of honor up on my shelf.
That is a sweet story. Glad to hear stuff like this from time to time.
|
painted: 12 dryads,9 glade guard,2 glade guard scouts.
assembled but unpainted: 2 glade guard and the lord's bowman, 8 glade guard scouts, sexy elf lord
in the box: , 8 glade riders, , one female spellsinger, Orion, Ariel, the faerie queen. SOB immolator, 15 sisters. |

I <3 this thread; it's very positive and makes a nice change from constant complaining about one aspect of the hobby or another. Cheers MGS.
For me, it's the opening of the shrink wrap, exploring the contents of a new box and assembling said box.
The assembly, not painting, not playing, is actually one of my favourite parts.
And the occasional time when I actually enjoy painting a model is always nice.
This made me laugh too:

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

When talking about the "old days" of AD&D with childhood friends, they start talking about "X" being one of their favorite gaming memories ever, and it was something that you did which caused the memory.
I'm having a "group" message like that with some old childhood friends on facebook right now, in fact. I sent a message to all of them, thanking them for some of the best gaming memories I've ever experienced. I shared a few, then asked them to share some of theirs. It's been a blast.
Some of you older guys should try that!

Hobby happiness to me is having a project. It's all well and good to look at all your painted armies, your gaming table you made yourself, and your terrain your lovingly built but then the boredom starts to set in. Getting that new idea or box of men is the big thrill because you now have a purpose.

For me, it's sitting at the table with my fiancée, working on our armies and trying to theme them around each other. little things like making sure we're basing the same.
Having a joke about how all bar one hellion got trashed by a swooping hawk grenade pack.
Having days with her, my best mate and another friend sitting around painting, modelling, gaming, reminiscing etc.
Watching as your army gets trashed but having a laugh and making jokes all the way through
Just knowing that it's social and creative and giving you a sense of pride when that troll you kit-bashed and lovingly painted looks bad-ass and ready to go
Hoping that her 4 year old daughter or my newborn son will one day want to take up the mantle, then kick my butt and celebrate, so I can see the joy that I have in this hobby pass on to a new generation
So yeah that's what makes me happy (or will do in some cases) about this hobby

Sitting in bed, painting something while my missus is sitting next to me painting something else with the telly on.
Of course there are those times that'll never happen again like the first time she managed to follow a conversation between me and a GW buddy without getting confused.
And of course the first time she won a game, which was great fun to watch as it was against one of my long time friends
