Like a couple others have mentioned this would be a great opportunity for GW to try and make a skirmish level game, maybe even something between like a Mordhiem and WarhammerQuest styled game with experience and whatnot. That would be something that I myself and a couple of my Tolkien dork friends could get into, but I am just not interested in buying a large fantasy styled army for another different fantasy game and the painting the models and etc.
From a marketing point of view it makes sense you have the BotFA for the epic scale, you could use WotR for bigger hero scale battles, and Hobbit for your adventures/questss. It would cover the scope of scales and also if you look at the newest D&D it is almost like a Table-top game so clearly there is a market and fan-base for that.

Agreed.
They created WotR because players were breaking the LotR system with the scale they were trying to play at.

The Battle Of Five Armies is still available for sale, though as has been stated GW doesn't put much effort into selling it. When are forum users going to stop complaining about GW trying to sell more models and make money? It is the reason they exist. As long as they are not dishonest, deceptive or detrimental to people in how they do it, no one should be complaining about that.

The LoTR glory years of the early 2000s may have seen GW get "fat and lazy" by their own estimation, but they also saw the launch of an entirely new faction in 40K (Tau) and the release of 4th edition.
Though it is true that other factions, such as DE and Necrons, were left to gather dust.
We don't know what GW meant when they said "fat and lazy". They could have meant that a full bitz service was supported, a range of Specialist Games, a website with user forums, Chapter Approved, and annual campaigns. All of this has gone since then.
Make your own mind up about whether this was all good or not.

I trust GW to do very good miniatures with the new franchise, no doubt about that.
It's making rules that dont suck that is their problem.

Plenty of good rule sets out there which allow use of any minis, to include GW minis.

LotR really made GW explode. Sales really boosted at that point. Hugely. That's really when I gained my awareness for GW, and by extension, the hobby in general.
It's good that they'll be doing this again. Hopefully the sales will start going up and prices will start going down.

If sales go up it will be interpreted by GW that everybody lurves their products at that pricing and will not reduce them.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced today that it has extended its six-year licensing agreement with Games Workshop, enabling them exclusive, worldwide, all-language rights to produce tabletop games based on "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" properties.
