Subject: GW granted The Hobbit licence by Warner Bros
WARNER BROS. CONSUMER PRODUCTS EXTENDS LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH GAMES WORKSHOP TO INCLUDE
"THE HOBBIT" AND "THE LORD OF THE RINGS"
BURBANK, Calif., Wednesday, February 9, 2011 - Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced today that it has extended its six-year licensing agreement with Games Workshop, enabling them exclusive, worldwide, all-language rights to produce tabletop games based on "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" properties.
This extension allows Games Workshop, the largest tabletop fantasy and futuristic battle-games company, to expand on their arsenal of battle-games and model soldiers. Under the agreement, Games Workshop will continue to develop and increase their offerings from Middle-earth, the literary creation of J.R.R. Tolkien, allowing fans to realistically recreate action from the books and movies, based on one of the most thrilling stories ever told.
"Games Workshop has been a valuable partner of ours for a number of years and we look forward to continuing and expanding this successful relationship," said Karen McTier, Executive Vice President, Domestic Licensing and Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. "Their products reflect the true spirit of 'The Lord of the Rings' franchise and, as anticipation builds for the release of 'The Hobbit,' the property's loyal fans will be excited for these richly inspired offerings."
"'The Lord of the Rings' is now firmly established as one of our core game systems, and the opportunity to expand it further with the upcoming film 'The Hobbit' is very exciting indeed, both for us and our hobbyists," said Mark Wells, CEO, Games Workshop. "The fantasy worlds of Middle-earth, as realized in the original works of J.R.R. Tolkien and in Peter Jackson's groundbreaking film adaptations, make wonderful backgrounds and stories which Games Workshop faithfully reproduces through its range of miniatures and battle-games."
Queue the LotR-hate....
Personally I think its good news even if it means that they will produce a lot of figures that I will want, but not be able to afford!
And for the the haterz. Just look at GW's last financial figures and imagine where your precious game would end up without the inevitable financial boost The Hobbit will bring GW!
Cheers
Paul

I love it. Great news. And it might silence the constant stream of ranting by certain forum users about how GW's Lord Of The Rings business is dead or should be for a whole 5 minutes.

I think this is good news, not that i have any interest in the LOTR side of the game but feel if they didn't include the forcoming hobbit in the line of LOTR mini's it would be an opertunity lost and collectors would miss out on adding the new films figures to the collection.
Is it another 10 year licence then?
Only bad side is it may stop any specialised games getting brought back into the limelight.

Aye, I'm glad to hear this - not sure that any Hobbit-specific models will be of direct use to me (not a great deal of Gondorians in The Hobbit, after all ), but the prospect of new models is always a good one, particularly if it helps renew interest in the LOTR games. One, for more opportunities to game, and two, to increase the odds of new models in the general range. I want my plastic Dol Amroth footsoldiers!

Ah, good news. I love the LotR aesthetic and I'm hoping that the figures will be available for a long time for my collecting and/or gaming purposes. Not a fan of War of the Ring, but I like the scale of the Skirmish game quite a bit.
Oh god, more skirmish battles with short people...
I do love LOTR, as in the books, and mostly in a historical way, but... lets say, I prretty much quit buying WD since a huge chunk was taken up by LOTR releases, its been a long time.

Frankly, I would have been highly shocked if the license didn't get extended to the Hobbit.
I really hope this means that GW will be bringing back the expanded models for their Battle of Five Armies warmaster game.
Great game but finding those damned metal minis is a heartbreaking pain.
Now that GW has the TTG rights for the warner movie, and GW also have TTG rights to the literary side of tolkien's work (minus the Silmarillion) we will see quite a bit of coverage for the LotR side of things.
Both states of Beorn. Perhaps his offspring and ancestors as well (beornings). Those new Del Toro reworked Wargs (PLEASE!). A new Goblin King. Ooodles and oodles of lovely new tolkien dwarves. etc...
Yeah...its going to be the final shot of influence that GW will have with their LotR license for the foreseeable future. They need to strike while that iron will be red hot.
Which means models for the literary license first (lord knows WotR needs to be filled in during that time), then models for the warner license after the movies are released.
i'm happy for LOTR fans that they'll be getting some love even if i don't play (and never have) the LOTR game. i don't begrudge fellow gamers their plasticrack... especially since i haven't bought a white dwarf since bush was in his first term. (the LOTR stuff in WD always seemed the least useful to me back in the day...)

No complaints here, but it's unlikely to be something I play. A return to the small scale skirmish game will do it some favours IMO, while WOTR is there for the Battle of the Five Armies.
Not fussed either way.
The LoTR minis are generally better looking than WHFBimho
I don't get the hate that some have for the games.
However GW get their paws on another corner of the gaming world? Not sure that is so good. Not sure if that is bad - could someone with more knowledge of the gaming market clarify for me please.

Is that the Fantasy Flight game?
It is out of print at the moment, but I believe it is due for a reprint.
Personally I'm not interested in GW's LoTR, though I have no hate for it and wish it well. I just don't need another army collecting game in my cupboard. I would be more than happy with a set of WoTR and the expansion.

No, War of the Ring is the name of the LotR game now.

Does that also mean that we may finally see Beorn and the Storm Giants that were tantalizingly promised ALLLLLL the way back in the Legions of Middle-Earth expansion for SBG?
And that was some time ago now

hey, hey, the SBG isn't quite dead, I much prefer it over WOTR, you need too many guys for WOTR, I can get 1 box of gondorian rangers plus a blister and thats a SBG force.

hopefully they won't bring out a 'new edition' (sell-more-modelsified) of the LOTRSBG rules, they're great at the minute
What on earth? They're terribly balanced. While the game itself is interesting, most evil factions don't stand a cold day's chance in hell of winning with the points system as it is. That said I hope they update it.
