They don't look perfect, but they look worse ultra up-close like this than they really are.
This was done with clear extruded acrylic rods colored with a permanent marker.

Dammit.
Now I want to do this too:

if there is no article of this, i suggest one is made, compiling stuff.
also, might be worth a petiton over at miniwargaming.com
look over in their conversion parts section.. even if demand for other colors is low, im sure that if enough of us harass them, they might add the other stuff to stock

I'll do that once we get it all figured out.
Anyone who wants blue, yellow, or reddish-orange: http://store.miniwargaming.com/category/miniature-conversions/ (you want 3/32" diameter)
I may have to contact them to see if they can make purple without me having to order thirty thousand feet of it at a time.

Well the trick is they dont make it, someone else makes it. The amount they sell is fairly small and the price is high when you compare it, but since I dont want 6 feet worth of the stuff kcicking around....... the price is right.

Well, My necrons are primed black, dry-brushed boltgun metal. Then i painted strips/bands of gold on them. Then colord lines and squares. I'm tempted to color each squad differently, ive got a dark green and a dark blue, so the blues would need to have their green rods replaced with blue, and i could add Red as wel. Not really sure how yellow might work, it doesnt stand out so hot against gold. A purple though would add more options.. beyond that, im not sure what other color you could really do?
I cant do much about the fact that i glued the green rods into the destroyers, apart from repainting the blue bits to be green. Im iffy on changing this far into the project, especially as all my destroyers are second-hand and have been repainted once already.......

So leave the Destroyers like they are. Use different colors for the more elite units. Pariahs painted primarily a shining Burnished Gold with yellow rods could look great. Tomb Spyders with red 'welding tools'. Perhaps the Lord's personal bodyguard in icy blue.
I'm sure you can make it work.

In my own Necron army, I used coloured flourescent rods by a company called Plastruct. The 3/32" size.
I don't know if they do purple.

Contacted the company, though, and those (plus clear) are the only colors they do.
A shame, really, they're the right size and everything. Great looking army, by the way. And thanks for the attempt! Automatically Appended Next Post: (of course, if you find purple around somewhere on their site, do let me know! )

So I just ordered some of the 3/32" red Plastruct stuff, nearly entirely based on how cool Ravendove's picture is. But when it gets here, how do I need to cut it? Is the 3/32" narrow enough to be cleanly cut with a hobby knife or jeweler's saw, or do I need to get an acrylic/plastic cut-off wheel for a Dremel? Any hints would be nice!
(also first post, glad to be here, etc)

Hobby knife should be fine, but you might want to use plastic clippers to get a flat edge.

Cool, thanks! I was worried the sprue cutters would mash the ends instead of cutting them cleanly - I guess I could experiment on the green ones that came with my warriors, since I won't be using them? Does anyone know how the GW acrylic compares in toughness to the Plastruct stuff?

The Plastruct rods are more flexible than GW's for sure. Not nearly as brittle.

Anyone considered using some nail polish on the rods to give them the purple color? I haven't seen it suggested yet and you could probably find a purple that will go on clear and I'd think it would adhere to the acrylic just fine (acrylic nails)
I'll give it a shot and update when I get around to it... still too far back in my army painting process.

Ooh, good idea.
I have been using magic marker, and meeting with adequate, but not idea, success.
Post your results when you try it out!

i would try the plastruct 3/32" fluorescent blue rod, then mix tamiya clear blue and clear red paints to get a purple you like and brush or dip the rods in, i did that with my necrons but blue and turned out nice
