I dont like SC because I feel the rules are not as balance as they are for regular HQs. There are some that are incredibly good like Elrad. I dont see why you would ever not take him if you wanted a fairly expensive farseer.
Then there are those that just plain suck. It just seems like when it came to writing up the SCs they didnt spend very much time thinking them through.
As for me, I play DE mostly and dont really identify with any of the SC. I suppose if I really wanted a heavy HQ i would consider taking Vect but then again his pimpmobile is horrible.
I dont like hellians so I will probable never take the Baron
I dont like the DS rules very much for vehicles so I will probably never take the Duke
I suppose if I get rather annoyed at a particular opponent's psyker I would consdier Lady Mays.
Still I dont see myself using them very much.

Hes just an HQ not a special charracter.
Well then, I guess I've never used a SC.
Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do
I have to say, reading this thread, Im surprised at how many of you mention people throwing hate around for taking a SC. If that was what you got from reading my post, I definitely didnt mean it that way. Ive used Thraka only twice. Even though hes a serious power house, I have RARELY seen a game I won or lost that he would of made the difference in. I mean, if I ever played in a tourny, I would think more on taking him. But I do incredibly well with 2 BigMeks, and they arnt anything fancy. I dont expect them to do anything more then provide cover saves for a gak load of units. Same with a Warboss. I expect the Warboss to charge in a group, and kill stuff. Then after that, try my luck again until he dies.
I personally prefer the BigMek because of the bonuses they provide over a Warboss, not to mention they can take a metric crap ton of wargear. Im mainly just wanting to know if you feel that you HAVE to take a SC? Do you think you can win without them? Yes some are good, some are bad, but do you think your a better player if you win without them? Would you be a stronger BA player if you kicked in teeth without the typical Mephiston/Sanguinor? Do you have more respect for a player that can win without taking SC like that?

Would you be a stronger BA player if you kicked in teeth without the typical Mephiston/Sanguinor? The over costed duo are not typical in our group.
Do you have more respect for a player that can win without taking SC like that? Not really
That is mainly what I wanted to know

I would have the same respect for a player that would win a game without SC just like if a Magic the Gather player won with a deck full of cards under $10.00. Its pretty cool if you can win a game like that, but I don't think there should be a lack of respect for a player that uses SC.
Would a make your own HQ be all that special? I see that going the same way as lists, there are certain ways that you arm it and if you mention thinking about taking anything else you're slowed/not competitive/laughed off even if it can actually work (footdar as an example). At the point that the meta pressures certain builds it won't be much different than the current special characters.

Erm... off topic but I just want to toot my horn (mainl because I'm so much better in Magic than in 40k, so my poor, poor ego). I top 8'ed a Regional tournament, won National Qualifiers tournament and top 8'ed another big tournament with decks that cost less than $20... in total. For some weird reason I win big when using cheap decks (and lose with really expensive decks).
With that said, I don't think it's analogous. As I have said earlier, you don't have to buy an SC model to have an SC character. That's what I like about this hobby: you are not constricted to buy this and that to get this and that. You can even build things from scratch if you're that good.
And I made my friend promise she'll sculpt me models, I paint them and I get to keep them as long as she can put it on her folio. She's taking a major in sculpting while I have a major in painting. FUN TIMES. Art majors unite!
