marv335: I don't care if its the server company, I will inquire.
Da-rock: Where did I say my PC is "so" solid, please don't confuse my post, I referenced the age of my PC in terms of still going operating at full effiecieny, thanks to annual maintanance.
And you should learn not to attack people over the internet. Yes I am responsible for my PC, of course, and websites are reponsible to maintain a malicious content-free zone, less they scare everyone away who isn't some sort of PC masochist.

Vermillion: I can assure you my approach is not so agressive, I will simply be running a boot CD, and utilizing the Windows Recovery console to fix the damaged files and registry.
No wiping of my HD required, yes I have back-ups. But I also have some newer files like a Space Hulk campaign, Necromunda campaign and other files that are backed up, but not as recent.
Thanks anyway.
terribletrygon: So, I guess its your own fault for crossing the street when the lights aren't working properly? Precautions aside.

My interent usage only involves hobby sites and forums, so I have only freeware programs after my AVG/McAfee/Norton was up.

For some, I'm sure it boils down to schadenfreude.

Hope Warseer is back soon.

Wow, AgeOfEgos, I definitely had to google that one...

About the computer of six years- I agree, that must be some kind of record these days! Hope you get it working again :-/ or maybe it's time to put that sheep out to pasture...

Up until this year, when I purchased a new MacBook Pro, I had been using an iBook G3 purchased in December 2001. I think I may have taken the cake with that one. My eight year old niece now uses it for the paint and word processing programs.

Back on topic: I hate seeing any website attacked. It's a shame that some people pursue hacking as a sport.

This is getting a bit too OT - no more discussions of computer ages and computer viruses you caught please. Any more after this post will be treated as spam/banal/pointless using our warning process.

There is not much more to say except good luck to our friends over at warseer getting it sorted out. Doing upgrades under pressure, keeping the site up as much as possible after being infected by something is a complete pain and I wouldnt wish it upon any admin. The only glimmer of goodness that can come out of this is that I'll be able to see just how the online 40k wargaming community flows without it's second most trafficked site, and how much traffic gets reflected to other sites. Dakka alone has seen a boost of 20% on our normal numbers today alone which is a much larger share of the warseer traffic than when they went down a few years back from technical issues. I might be able to share some numbers with you all once I have enough data.

While Dakka is immune by design to this particular exploit, we get hit by about 3-6 targeted attacks each day, and up to 100-150 automated attacks from various vectors. We had a close call about 2 years ago, but since then (as a result of it), even yakface and I have to jump through hoops to get anything done at a high level of access, and coupled with having non-standard forum software that is about 70% original code, we are largely immune to the majority of common attack vectors. This particular attack wont get us, but security is a process not a destination so nobody should get too cocky about the safety level of any website as it is always possible to slip up, get behind on security updates or simply get hit by a new 0-day exploit.

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!
