It almost certainly wasn't targeted at Warseer specifically. It most likely was an automated attack that hit common pieces of software that either their host or their site ran.
Yeah, this is the same automated attack that happened a couple years ago that hit my webpage.
Everyone with FTP access to Warseer needs to
1) disconnect from the internet after updating virus protection
2) get rid of all trojans before continuing
3) restore Warseer from backup or manually edit out all injected code from every page (would be better to just restore from backup)
4) change FTP access to Warseer, as it's no doubt been compromised.

Hence, the theory that it is by a disgruntled ex-member who was hit to hard with the banhammer... is false?

Don't think so. Killkrazy has a good idea about this. Warseer is probably just one target amongst many. Botnet attacks nowadays are, well, everyday occurrence.

Those banner ad exploits seem to be particular bastards.
Unless you guys are hosting the site at Legoburners house (or someone else's place and NOT using a hosting company) you're just as vulnerable to it. We had about 30 of our websites get hammered with this crap, turns out it was on the hosting company's side of things, and there was nothing we could do to fix it, but wait on them.
We're not vulnerable to this one. It's a good reminder to everyone running sites to be aware of current exploits and attacks and do what they can to neutralize or avoid them.

Might want to edit that
I've been worried everytime I go on the site that I might get a virus, so its good to see thy've finally taken this sort of action against it

As a Guilder over on WS, I don't get the adverts, so I didn't get hit.
Still annoying.
I am a member of several gaming sites, although I use WS most.
I really must renew my DCM status over here...

Because it's news. Any news, good, bad, interesting or not, big or small - us Dakkanaut's will pounce on it and tear it appart like alley cats to a bag of chips.

Because the community is more than one manufacturer and one forum. As good as Dakka is (and it is!), there are several bits on Warseer that are great. Mostly for me the stuff on their MPnT Tread Head threads.
It could also happen to Dakka (pray to the cognative gods), I would hope that the message would be passed on to prevent mass virus spread.
Warseer down, then up again, Google warns me so I stay away.
Unfortunately after reading it was up again after a week of being down, well, I really wanted to check out the project logs.
So, on thursady I visited Warseer, it worked, saved a bookmark directly to a PLOG (Blood Angels).
Later in the day I visit this bookmark and POW! INFECTED! The Hiloti trojan and a bunch of other 134fgghh.exe type files instantly disabled my task manager and pop-up a fake AV.
Ran System restore, but it failed, twice. Ran Malwarebytes and Spybot, got rid of the infected files.
RESTARTED the next morning.
MY COMPUTER OF 6 YEARS IS NOW WRECKED! It will not boot past Windows.
So yeah, THANKS MUCH WARSEER! If, IF! I can even fix my PC by myself or through $$$ I will be seeking some form of apology or taking legal action. I know it's not Warseers "fault" they got hacked, niether is it mine for visiting a website that should have been safe.

I know it sounds like an inappropriate thing to say, but... well done for making a computer last for 6 years! I am lucky if I reach half of that :(
Not sure that it would be anyone's vendetta against Warseer causing this. Surely there is nothing to stop the banned person from making another account? And other forums (such as B&C) are much more liberal with their use of the 'moderate' key.

For some, I'm sure it boils down to schadenfreude.
Hope Warseer is back soon.
Wow, AgeOfEgos, I definitely had to google that one...
About the computer of six years- I agree, that must be some kind of record these days! Hope you get it working again :-/ or maybe it's time to put that sheep out to pasture...

Yeah, these modern machines are POS. They just don't make them like they used to. I have an Atari from the 80s that still works.

Legal action because your PC got a virus?

Are you serious? If your PC is that old it doesn't mean it was a really solid PC and somehow now its inconceivable that it got wrecked. The older the PC the higher chance it is due to crash....not the other way around.
I work in the industry and you are the type of customer we want to smack and remove all services from. YOU are responsible for your PC and the sites you go to. You are not forced to go to Warseer or any other site. Don't be like the Tools who tell me, "But it worked fine yesterday!" Ya, EVERYTHING worked the day before it broke!!!!!

I doubt it. It's much more likely that the initial infection was caused by a staff member who had FTP access looking at porn or being fooled by spam emails claiming to be from a company he uses (this happens all the time with World of Warcraft.) Someone probably saved their FTP login for easy access at some point, not realizing the risk.

Ok, how to fix it yourself in these following easy steps.
Wipe your hard drive, full reformat, and deleting and recreating partitions.
Reinstall windows.
Update everything needed.
Put anything you need back on it from your backup disks, external hard drives etc.
You do keep back ups right? I mean having a 6 year old computer you must have just in case the hard drive blew up after the average 3 year life they have right?

If you are browsing the internet with decent Security Software and NoScript (or an equivalent) you shouldn't get raided from visiting infected websites. If you do not have something like these sort of things protecting you; then yes, it is your own damn fault for not foreseeing this kind of event happening.
