Some very awesome terrain/dioramic pieces!

I would even pay AUS RRP for those.

Some very nice stuff coming out for fantasy. Kind of bummed that I can't buy them AND keep my dignity, due to GW's pricing in Japan. The dragon looks great, cockatrice solid, characters great, terrain is interesting-- those dreadfire portal flaming skulls would be great ammo for my TK catapults!

The terrain is terrible, other than the stairway.

Just the skulls on top of skulls with giant skulls and firey skulls with a side of skulls thing is cartoony and daft. This terrain and the new monsters all look very WoW and ott to me, one of the things I always loved about the Warhammer background was the gothic darkness about it.

This isn't grimdark, it's grimdaft.

Aye, the stairway will be good for Mordheim, where individual figs can make use of a battle up the staircase, but the rest is meh.

Also really disliking the Black Dragon, not the way I would have expected it at all. Looks like its about to crash to the ground as it's tail just got caught in the tree.

You nailed it, that's exactly what it reminds me of. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I'm sure that's what the reference was. Certainly, not the warhams Grampa played.

I don't get your WoW reference. Which zone were you thinking of? If anything WoW is watered down Warhammer especially as Mark Gibbons is now doing art for them. I have seen Blizzard adapt ideas from various IPs and they dont deny it, in fact they celebrate it. There are plenty of popculture references in Warcraft. I could see a younger player who experienced Warcraft before Warhammer thinking it was this way round but for me the new storm of magic ties back into the over the top 80s Citadel miniatures that I loved then and still love now (especially the old Chaos Toilet). This isn't intended as an old codger 'get off my lawn' response, just an observation from someone who fell in love with D&D in the mid eighties and then found a messed up British company who did something similar but a whole lot darker and over the top (a bit like my love of Iron Maiden).

I also don't understand all this hate for the over the top skulls and spikes. Chaos spikey bits have always been part of Warhammer and it amazes me that people get interested in Citadel miniatures and then complain about it. Whilst I was surprised about the grim reaper stairway it fits right in with the Island of blood. If you go back to those pictures and most of Games Workshop's centerpiece scenery they all have giant skulls. In the 8th edition rulebook they make it abundantly clear that most of the terrain in Warhammer Fantasy Battles is messed up in some way and that chaos magic is rife. I think this is a good thing because it differentiates Warhammer from Middle Earth and with the Hobbit and the inevitable Battle of the Five Armies coming, Games Workshop need to put Warhammer into a stark contrast if they want that IP to survive what will be three to four years of Middle Earth mania. Also with all the lawsuits flying around the industry (most of them rom GW admittedly) it is far better for GW to say that Warhammer is over the top chaos spiky bits so that it is easier for them to defend their IP and also easier for the many other excellent companies to do their own thing and not be liable for the IP hammer. GW know they cant copyright half timber houses and standard european castles, but if they do wacky skulls and spikes everywhere they can make that their Warhammer style. I was, and to some degree still am a bit surprised at how Chaos derived Warhammer 8th edition has become but I am very happy that GW are going for it in a big way because it makes it unique and allows other companies like Mantic a chance to get in on the action and create some competition.

This can only help make the market more healthy and I look forward to the day when people wake up and realise they don't have to by things they don't like whether that's from Games Workshop, Apple, Lucasfilm or Blizzard.

My sense of MGS's comments is the he associates the new terrain with an aesthetic commonly associated with games like WoW, rather than a specific zone. It trades the menace and the gritty realism (obviously fantastical, pardon the oxymoron) of the older warhammer for the over the top (read: silly), oversimplified modern warhammer setting.

It's all about the kiddies. The current target demographic has be weaned on animation and video games; this is what they know. The storied times of using your imagination are gone, games workshop is doing it for you.

Yeah, more or less wrong thread. I was referring to the whole storm of magic thing or whatever it's called...there's more in this thread about that than coversation about VCs, guess I confused it with the other thread.

Maybe there is something for Ogres in the Ogre Kingdom October release

BTW small tidbit about the Vampire monster:
Harry wrote:Nope I have heard roughly the same ... a giant zombie abyssal bat night terror type thing
I have heard that it is....awesome looking.
.... and given that I heard Alex Hedstrom has sculpted it I am imagining something very special given the last several kits he has sculpted with all those computery gizmos he uses.

Hmmm... this is a thread I'll be watching carefully. Not convinced on the Necro, it's a good sculpt, but I still love my Necro from Warhammer Quest (internet cookie to whoever remembers his name).

The large monster I may have to just get to have a centerpiece for the army, doubt I'd ever use it in a game smaller than 5k.

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings.

Multi-purpose large monster kits for every warhammer army is interesting, but I personally think GW's making a mistake with it. The giant spider for O&G was a nice sculpt, and the Tomb Kings monster is OK... but seems kind of out of place. With fantasy, I just don't think they can go by the same model as 40k... the real thing that's going to stop people from starting it is the high cost of how many gazillion normal troopers you need. I wish they'd focus on that...

That said, an awesome abyssal terror sculpts would get a huge thumbs up from me, I'm just not digging the trend is all.

75hastings69 hinted at the fact that Ogre sized Flesh Golems similar to Frankenstein's monster are in the works or even part of the second wave.
