I doubt it was the hobbit as I'm pretty sure there are only goblins in it even at the battle of 5 armies. Tolkien didn't put actual Orcs into his novels (at least any that where published to my knowledge) untill the LoTR books which is where I first heard of them back in elementary school when I first read them.
