Subject: When was the first time you heard about 'Orcs'?
I'm not just talking about GW Orcs but the race of Orcs in general. I knew about trolls and goblins but I think it wasn't until I was in high school that I heard of Orcs. I don't remember if it was 'The Hobbit' that introduced them to me or if it was Warcraft I.
So how about you? When was the first time you heard of Orcs?

LoneLictor on thread about an ork choking the Emperor:
LoneLictor wrote: I like to imagine the Emperor kills so many Orks that he ends up half buried beneath a pile of corpses, with only his head sticking out. A lone grot stumbles across him, and starts choking him.
Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

The Hobbit. I remember my forst introduction to all things Tolkien by having that book read to me.
Yes the orcs were known as 'goblins' they were refered to as orcs once. I was so captivated by the book I remember even that.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

I love that movie. The music was awesome.
I find myself humming " Where there's a whip there's a way" ( from the Rankin/Bass Lord of the Rings animation) at work quite a bit....seems to fit the mood.
...I still watch both the animated versions of the Hobbit and The Lord Of the Rings quite a bit...great fun movies.

I actually had some plastic orcs that came with as cardboard castle when I was 5, I just called them pigmen because they were not identified on the box.

In the Hobbit, he makes reference to the "orcs of the mountains" at some point, noting that they run stooped over with their hands almost touching the tunnel floor. Like Orlanth, I was a massive fan of the Hobbit as a child. Better than LOTR!
I've been interested in them ever since. I always wanted to know where they came from, why they were so evil, that sort of stuff. I loved those brief snapshots into orcish life we got in LOTR (when Ugluk's raiders are talking about the alliance between the goblins of the mountains, the mordor "apes" and the Uruk Hai, and again when Shagrat and Gorbag are discussing the Nazgul and life under Mordor.)
They always seemed more interesting than the protagonists, like their motivations and situations were more complicated and so on. Guess that's why I have an Ork army in 40K, an Orc army in Fantasy and an Orc/Goblin army in LOTR/WOTR.
