I've gots it!

What you need: A monolith, some sort of a kind of speakers of some type which's dimensions should be smaller than the inside of the monolith, glue, paint, stuff.

What you do: You build the monolith, and then you-- No, wait, you... *peers at the monolith* ... Insert the speakers -before- you build and paint the monolith.

I'll be back when I has another monolith.

you could do it, i dont have the green portal thingy glued onto mine, it just gets shoved on and sticks...so i could take that off, throw a little radio speaker in there, some led lights, and ive got a monolith where the green things light up and plays mario every time i get a kill! its the perfect plan!

For marines: DA deathwing and BA DOA armies are both competitive and doable without tanks.

CSM: Without vehicles may be hard but it could be a good survivable firepower base.
Orc hoard: Doable but somewhat boring unless you venture out into kan wall, biker hoard etc.
Daemons: Light on firepower but very fun and varied lists that do work.
Necrons: Cool but personally I would wait the 2 months or so and check out their new codex first.
Nids: If you don't mind being hard pressed to handle vehicles, it is definitely a fun army.

The main issue you'll run into with the 'Crons is that they get boring real fast. You dont get many choices on what you can bring until the new codex comes out. Then it'll be worth playing but my best friends plays necrons and hes got about 10k in 'Crons.

Its a pain in the ass to fight them with the Well Be Back rule, but if you can get a good list, say a bunch of khorne daemons, the necrons FALL APART! Literally! Haha

I run daemons (about 7.5k) and have every model almost. They're a real challenging army to play with all the probability that goes on but once you get it going its utter destruction. I just played a 1k nurgle list against a nidzilla 1k and slaughtered 'em.

The Daemons are ridiclious army for elites, troops are alright but little overpriced (both $ and pts) but what they lack in that area the elietes most def. make up for it! The flamers and bloodcrushers are the most destructive.

The HQ's for daemons are ungodly awesome... ha daemon puns. They ALL get 4+ invernurable saves or better, they kill tanks like crushing soda cans, and do insane stuff. However the army is costly $$$ wise. Each Greater Daemon is 50$, but I've found em for SUPER cheap on ebay. Like 10-25 bucks, and I now have 10 GD.

Since you're looking to stray away from a mech list, the daemons would fit that category with only 1 actual vehicle, mind you its the best walker in the game, the Soulgrinder. Its brutal, firing largeblast templates, 2 close combat weapons, a str 10 ap 1 shot has fleet and is possessed. Its absurd..... OR..... you can field MORE monsterous creatures for heavy support. You can have 5 monsterous creatures running around lopping heads and opening cans. And with such a wide variety of customization, you can fight any army. But be wary, its a tactical heavy army. It takes time to learn and adjust.

The orks on the other hand are a number army. They operate in massive squads of 30, and are DIRT cheap (both pts and $$) Lots of people play orks. I myself have a 3.5k ork army im looking to sell for about 350-400$. I have 150+ boys and NOTHING and i mean NOTHING can stop that many models in a game. 1v1 are easy wins when you bring numbers like that!

The orks do have a fair bit of mechs though, so if you're looking to stray away, you could take orks, but be warned, mechs in an ork list increase the killy power greatly. The only problem with orks.... THEY CANT SHOOT WORTH *&%#!!!!! With BS 2 they can't hit a barn...from 2 ft. BUT! what they lack in shooty the MORE than make up in killy.

Necrons are a good starter army. They're simple and strong with (currently) little room for customization. But that'll change soon with the release of a new codex. Although, as much as i hate to admit it, they do have the strongest vehicle in the game. The Monolith. Its impossible to kill and you'd be better of just going for a phase out win.

Like i said before they do get boring. My friends been playing em for 8 months or so and hes starting a GK beacuse is wants a change. So if you're looking to add a little variance then I would wait to get the new codex before you start getting models.

Overall, my suggestions to you would be Daemons, Orks, and CSM...
