Hi gaming community,

I am trying to start up a new army but have fallen at the first hurdle. Deciding what to choose.
I'm not sure what army to try to collect next and was wondering if anyone could help?

I already have 2k of Death Korps of Krieg and I'm now looking to start somthing new. So if anyone could help give advice that would be great ^^

It kinda depends on what you like I think. Do you want an evil army or a good one? Are there any armies you certainly don't want to play? Do you want a horde army, elite army, vehicle army,...?

First, what armies have caught your eye? What do you want in your army? A fast, High-risk High-reward army? Or a Safe, All-comers list?

This'll make it easier to decide on an army!

I like the sound of an evil army ^.^ I don't particularly want to play another vehicle army, so that I can try other things also I could try a HIgh-risk army as I seem to have good luck when it comes to Wargaming

Well, for Evil armies you could consider:

Orks, Tyranids, Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Daemons, Dark Eldar or Necrons.

If you want to avoid vehicles, Tyranids, Orks, Daemons and Necrons would be good choices!

Tyranids and Orks are in their element on foot lists but can be quite expensive to get a respectable army together.

Daemons are great for people who like to have to adapt to a situation as they can never be played the same way twice.

Necrons are a little outdated and I'd reccomend staying away from them until they get their new codex (in a couple of months)

I'm not sure wether you like them, but I really like how DE look. If you want a horde army take Orks or Tyranids. More elite-ish are the CSM and the Necrons I think. I can't help you too much, because I'm quite new to the game, and don't know how all the armies play.

In an Ork army you can still use the Trukks, so not entirely no-vehicles Green tide-tactic is without vehicles tough.

I might look into those armies a bit more and see if any catch my attention. I might even wait to see what the new Necron codex is like as they would probably suit the background of my Death Korps and make for good enemies against each other

Terminator styled City fighting between Death Korps and Necrons seems like a cool way to go

Well I play with Daemons and they are nice and funny to play with they al deep strike and one second there is nothing and the other there's a big daemon who blows up your tanks
and also orks are nice they can come in big hordes are they can be put in many ramshackle vehicles what you like the most

Ye daemons do sound quite cool, and if I could convert Orks to make there look work more with my city scape then that would be really good for a horde army.

But I think I might still wait to see the new Necron Codex if it's only a month. ^.^

Try a chaos army their isnt enough of them.

Honestly, comes down to playstyle. Every army plays differently, even if your a netlister. I normally go for very assault oriented armies

Ye my current army Is quite tank heavy and I wanted to try something different, but I still like the City ruins theme and currently making a Cityscape battleboard for my Death Korps to fight in, and would be good if the other army could use it too as it would save me making another battle board.

I would say that...

If you want horde: Orks or nidz

Elite: daemons

And that's if you don't want vehicles and you want evil army
I usually just start armies I like, First tau: reason I started 40k, I just love how they look.
Second: DA, Everyone wants marine army and they are my favourite marines
third: Daemons, Like their playstyle and slaanesh daemons look cool (so many boobs )

Everyonne doesn't NEED marine army, but they are cool ( I guess) and competive.
And competive marine armies are : SW, BA and GK
But I would start army YOU like.
Still there are few things I recommend you to think: Do you like how they look?
Do you like their playstyle?
Do you want to be competive? (ignore this if you are casual player)

I've never played in a tournament before but might like to give it a try in the future ^.^

I can always change how an army looks by customizing them.

So it's all really down to play style, which I think I like the sound of an Elitist army like Daemons or Necrons and I could play both game types with daemons so it really depends on how amazing the new necrons are when they comes out

To choose between Necrons and Demons...

Hmm..

Well, Necrons are easy to get table-ready, have some really cool stuff and have tons of fun conversation options as well as unique paint-schemes.

Demons are... Fun, have more options for the bulk of troops than Necrons (then again, -anyone- has more options for troops than the Necrons!), but the thing that always sets me back is how I want a single-god-themed army, so I'd either end up with Khorne or Tzeentch, and whilst Bloodletters are scary in melee, they... Can't... Do... Anything, before they're actually in there.

I'd go for Necrons, build a solid bulk of reliable, highly resilent firepower and then throw in a Lord with some fun stuffs, and a couple of Destroyers and/or Heavy destroyers for chasing down enemy armor/elites, and... Then expand, depending on how large an army you want and what units you like the most.

Where have you heard of new Necrons? And when-ish? Now you got me hesitant to starting a DE force.. =o

ok sorry, no I just spotted a couple of post on this site about a Necron codex and models.

I think someone mentioned it was august or that it had been moved from august to november :S

Gotta hate how GW keeps everything in the dark all the time, I had just sort of almost kinda nearly decided that I'd possibly maybe start a DE army when I'd get my paycheck, now I want to know more about the Necrons first. D=

Problem is that every time I've done that in the past, I end up gluing the army together, then I paint a couple of troops, the special models, and then feel that I need a break from painting... And... Well, my old Necron army has like 8/40 Warriors painted, and has begun to fall apart before it even got finnished.

I'm kinda leaning towards CSM otherwise, but I hate the part-plastic/part-metal Thousand Sons, which would be the ones I find most cool. And then I'm not too fond of that their predators haven't got any fun weapons on them.

there is another finecast release date soon and that might have some chaos stuff in (just a guess on what's in the next finecast release)

That would be awesome. And seeing as the Deathguard got their Finecast, Khorne Berzerkers already are in plastic, and that no-one plays the Emperor's Children, Thousand Sons have a chance of actually getting finecast minis =>

I'm not sure what exactly I'd need any big tank guns for, but it still sort of bothers me that they have none. Sure they can get 3 lascannon shots or a bunch of heavy bolter/auto-cannon shots, but there's just something very nice about shooting in a shell that blows up half a company of whatever-it-is-I'm-aiming-at.

Some of the first 40K models I bought was a group of Thousand Sons, and even though it was back when I couldn't keep the paint within the lines, I think those minis almost looks cooler than my Necrons, or even that Grey Knight I bought the other year... (which also was like, just before they went out and said that DH was about to be released)

And with Ahriman and the fluff about the Rubric of Ahriman and all that being my favourite character and favourite fluff ever, I've always wanted a proper chaos army under the glorious banner of Tzeentch.

Just out of curiosity by the way, are you going to show up your Death Korps? I've always loved those minis but could never be bothered ordering an army from Forge World. (gas masks and vehilecular madness ftw!)

You could always use the Space Marine Vehicles, coat them in chaos iconograhpy and call them tainted tanks, that should be fine with most oponents in freindly games but I doubt it would be tournament legal.

And I might post up my DKoK some time not sure when though, as I might have to repaint them all first, they aren't that good.

I have just about all the 40K codices - except the SM ones. I have just about no clue of what they have that Chaos doesn't.

I mean I could get a vindicator which has a real, proper gun, but... It's already too far from a proper 'tank' in my opinion, I like the Leman Russes.

I'm so torn now, I want to see whatever happens to those Necron rumors, and what the new finecasts are, and despite that I really do not like the Crisis suits, I'd love a proper mechanized Tau army. Then again, I'm really turned off by their fluff, I kind of want an 'evil' army too, so either CSM, DE or Necrons. I think. Necrons would require a lot more options and special characters for me to pick them (like, giving the Lord an option of having a spyder body, seen so many epic convertations of it! Although I'm not sure what it would do), I love the DE vehicles and everything, but I think that many of the heads look pretty weird, like the kabal one with a thorn crown, and somehow that sort of makes me want to see what's in the box before I go for it.

And I hope you decide to put your DKoK up, doesn't matter if they're well-painted or not, can't be worse than anything I do. xD

Issue is, if you want something that doesn't spam tanks... you have very few choices unless you want a fluffy, fun army.

I'd recommend blood angels jump pack heavy army and you could do a horde of marines; very fluffy
Orc horde or nid hordes
You could try a gunline vanilla marine army, but don't expect to win much

All sorts of stuff you could try

Nope, I don't have any 'well-painted armies' as I usually end up with picking the coolest-looking guy and spending a ton of time painting that one model until I'm satisfied (atleast that one model always appears to improve anytime I get a new army!), but... Yeah, no. I do now own a fully painted army... Or do I? *ponders* ... No, I'm quite sure none are completed. And as I just opened up my paint pots to see how they were doing and found all of them (around 100 as I never throw them away or use them up) completely dried out, which means I need new paint, and new models, new brushes, new glue, as well as getting my own copy of the codex of whicever army I end up wanting to play, everythings going to have to be postponed until I get my paycheck, and being a student that's not much to wave around with either. =P And to be honest, I haven't even watched the prices since last summer on WH40K, but I do hear (well, see) -a lot- of people being mad at increasingly increased price increases at an increased rate.

And you are nowhere near as confusing as I am when it comes to picking an army, in one week I'm probably looking at something like 'nids or Orks again.

... Okay, perhaps not tyranids, I know I could -never- paint an army and I'm just not too fond of their appearence or play-style.

But I have been almost quite certain of possibly wanting to play DE for almost 48 hours now, so that's a good sign I guess!

ye that's good, and I'm sure the models you've painted are very well done though ^.^ I porbably have some unpainted DKoK somewhere which would mean that my only army isn't fully painted :S and I have about half a squad of Necron warriors that I gave genestealer arms to to make them zombies and ony three of them are painted :S
