He chased some Dark Eldar through a portal to the Webway, yes. It's rumored that he could be a Gladiator in Cammoragh.

This is one of the most frustrating things for me. There are no answers to anything and no prospect of answers. Im ready for the 40k world to be shaken up. I want to know why, apparently, the Loyalists are all missing or dead and the Traitors are living the dream in the Warp. I want to know where Russ went. Is the Emperor dead or not? The Imperium can only decay for so long and remain interesting. They are doing a great job with the Heresy series, but whats going on now? Its like the last few seasons of X Files.

I don't think everyone is saying the Primarchs aren't supposed to be brilliant. The books clearly say "Primarch X is brilliant" or "Primarch Y is a master of Z".
I think the issue arises when you write a novel intending to portray a superhuman being, but you do it in a ham-fisted sort of way, so that the superhuman being's actual actions and words don't really match up with how brilliant they're described to be. I don't think it's a coincidence that only the very best authors' portrayals come out looking like something beyond petulant children.

FYI, Battle for the Abyss is one of the Horus Heresy Novels...and it isnt the first one unfortunately.
All books written about GW products (published by GW of cors) are part of the BL.
(apologies if you know this already, for some reason i felt the need to re-iterate... )
Yes, the writers are backed by GW, otherwise of course, they wouldnt be published. They are also 'encouraged' to know/learn about/research a little bit about the background of what they are writing about (however, the success of this varies, read: Dan Abnett compared to C. S. Goto).
Sometimes the writers think up something and approach GW, sometimes vice-versa. (for example, when Dan Abnett wrote the Eisenhorn+Ravenor novels, he approached GW)
There is a lot of time devoted to writing the novels and background (unfortunately no-one seems to have proof-read Goto's gak), for the express reason that books are expensive (read:profit margin ) and people want to read them. Theres books ive looked for for years and cant find at a reasonable price due to availability and selling power, for example.
Anyways, hope thats in any way helpful, its a bit late here so im not sure this is coming out right.... sorry.
No worries. Your answer to my question seemed very sincere, and I thank you for it. And yes, I realized that Battle for the Abyss is not where the Heresy begins, but I didn't learn that until after the fact. I have Horus Rising sitting on my shelf at the moment, and once I've finished McNeill's novels on the Space Marines, I plan to read it.
And now that I know that the past novels are accurate to the fluff, I'm very much more motivated to read them now.

Glad i could help, i was/am being sincere i swear ( ) so ty .
Horus Rising is epically good, really starts off the series well IMO.
There are certain books which arent as good/true to canon (again, C.S. Goto) , but the majority are great, enjoy.
