Angron was a bad-guy character from an old Cap A comic in the early-mid 80s.*

An energy creature from the far future, where Sol was expanding in it's red giant phase and organic life was all gone and only angron's people were left.

*It also featured an Afro-american character called "eagle". One of those marvel team up things.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Liberty Prime from the Fallout universe. That giant robot looking thing runs around with grey space marine looking dudes and kicks the ever-loving s*** out of any evil noise marine looking dude he sees. He's got tons of flashy plasma attacks and moves incredibly fast for something that large. Ring any bells?

I'm also surprised that Blizzard hasn't sued Games Workshop over how badly GW ripped them off. WHFB Orcs are exactly the same as Blizzards Orc's in Warcraft, Tyranids are clearly stolen from the Zerg, even Space Marines are obviously plagiarized from Terrans in look and feel.

Yeah Space Marines are clearly plagiarised from Terrans. GW tried to camouflage it by making them slightly different. Then to really throw people off they went back in time and did it first... Bastards!

Uhm. I hope you're joking, right? Right? It's the other way around, mate.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
A few things people aren't taking into consideration.

Tons of things aren't necessarily ripoffs, even though they look or seem the same. Tons of things are just a natural extensions of other things. If you want war in space, you need space army dudes, and who are loosely considered (by themselves at least) to be the most badass army dudes we have on earth? The US Marines. Short leap to make the baddest army dudes in space "Space Marines". It's a natural extension. The world is full of stuff which has been "invented" several places around the world at virtually the same time, with no obvious connection between them. What does connect them is history.

Plus, there are only a few ways you can design a bipedal exosuit which makes it able to perform human-like tasks. If you look at almost all sci fi IP's where they have exosuits, they look virtually the same. Heck, take the outer armor off the Mechas in Appleseed, and even they have the exosuit configuration. Even Dreadnoughts have that configuration under all the ceramite.

Also, naming characters and stuff after angels, philosophers and writers is nothing new.

I'll agree that the Tyranids look like a carbon copy of what Aliens would look if they were a coordinated army. But Alien isn't entirely original either. Nothing is.

Obviously not...

There is no such thing as completely original idea ever in the history of ever. Everything is inspired by or built upon older ideas.
The roots of robots go back to truly ancient times - witches and wizards and gods creating helpers for themselves from trees or rocks - see Golem. Knights jousted against 'mechinical' targets. Inventors such as Leonardo da Vinci plan mechanical beings which can move their arms/legs/heads/wings. Kids played with toy dolls which grew ever more complicated with moving parts. There are stories of toys which come to life and act like a real boy (see Pinocchio and that story coming full circle in the movie AI). Electricity is invented and soon after there are remote control devices. Then, the word 'robot' comes into use, coming from the czech word for 'slave'...
Armour is a key feature of history and in many cases, the forces with superior armour were the victors in conflict. Prosthetic limbs have also been around since, well, peg legs.
Jules Verne combined those ideas into a mechanical piloted elephant (the original battle-tank). H G Wells expanded on this with War of the Worlds, and then mecha took off.

Thankfully, these days only the particular *expression* is protected by law, not the idea. The idea of a piloted bipedal robotic war machine is not protectable, but your particular design may have protectable elements (the original artistic elements which are separate from machinery which allows the mecha to function and fulfil its role as a piloted bipedal robotic war machine).

GW may have been inspired by many varied elements of history, other literary or film works, but they have managed to combine them all into a reasonably original universe.
If you want to have a look at all the ideas that GW uses in its works, and who used them before/after GW, have a look at this site: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Warhammer40000 . I particularly like its blurb about 40k .

I'd apologize for throwing this thread into disarray, but these sorts of GWS-rip-off threads are statistically nearly 100% destined for the lock, anyway. There simply is no place useful for them ever to go, and that's exactly where they do go, every time.

Man some people here need to calm down hey.

To me, at first glance, this LOOKS LIKE the dreadknight. Stick a grey knight on the front and make it smaller and I can see it. Apparently others can too. The reference to the APU's in the matrix do not remind of the dreadknight... so it's all opinion.

A little more research on the pic shows the knees of the walker are reversed compared to the dreadknight though... so I guess some GW lackey thought after watching the movie "ahhh... stick a marine on the front, reverse the legs... yeah copyright sorted!"

Looking back, the newer fluff lately seems to be taking mythology from a couple of religious ideas Before that, as I recall, RT came here to the US 1988, My friends and I played it, there many differences between it and 2nd and 3rd ed.

So, the fluff of the Emperor, the primarchs and the heresy, mashed together the Biblical stuff and Milton's Paradise Lost and tossed in some Dune(golden throne, Saudarkar super soldiers=Space Marines, IG/PDF=HGouse troopers, met Starship Troopers as the SM are using that power armor.) and then they went on from there.

Chaos now is Greek pantheon-esque mixed with Lovecraftian/Moorcock-esque elements. (still the bibilical stuff as the SCM are the fallen angels.

Eldar/Dark Eldar, Tolkien and DnD elelments there.

Orks, as with the space elves, (But the whole fungal aspect opf the orks and their asexual reproduction did make things a little more unique)

In RT they had the earliest of Termagaunts, they were the "Hunter Killers" who were puny overlords of the massive Stoats(four armed centaurs) and the Ymgarl Genestealers(which had lamprey like heads) were a separate thing. (Then there were the Genestealers with faces and their cults)

2nd ed gave us a actual army and the Genesteralers were revealed for the nids they were, then this computer game company came out about the time of the 3rd edition nids and liked what they saw, made the Game Starcraft with aline looking space elves(both loved crystal powers) Terran Marines(SM like, ) and the Zerg(Tyranid rip-offs) GW and Blizzrd came to an agreement and the Ravener was born until then there were all legged nids, the 4rd ed dex with raveners (snake body) did not look as the Raveners do now, they carried a gun. Now both companies have a happier relations hip as it were.

Necrons,,,Terminator mashed with SG-1 and the Mummy.

Squats-discontinued space dwarves, the guy who sculpted the molds and minis worked for an allied company, when GW went big, he asked for a job, got turned down and went home with the molds. But another race that was Tolkien/DnD based mixed with Hell's Angels/Miners/trench warfare

Sisters of Battle, as has been said, basically Nuns with Guns.

And now the youngest race the Tau. They did come out after SW:Ep-1 But they had also been in development for some time as their Kroot allies were older than they were!(3rd ed book of aliens pic). Having watched Animes as well, their 10ft tall battle suits remind me of the E-S.W.A.T. suits of "Appleseed" and the H.A.R.M. suits from Ghost in the Shell. The earlier slim and slender stealth suits reminded me of "Bubble Gum Crisis", the drones well, now we get all Star Wars like. Add in the hover tanks and there they looked like with the Tau appearance, Trade Federation guys, Kroot mercs, well in "Episode-2" I saw what looked like Kroot hounds in the sand people's camp fighting over a bone. Vespids=Geonosians. (The Vespid did come later, after the 2nd prequel came out.)

"Your mumblings are awakening the sleeping Dragon, be wary when meddling the affairs of Dragons, for thou art tasty and go good with either ketchup or chocolate. "
Dragons fear nothing, if it acts up, we breath magic fire that turns them into marshmallow peeps. We leaguers only cry rivets!
