My mother has traced her line back to 1680.
My father's line goes back to 1939 and ends there.
No records search can find anything, neither in English, Czech or Hungarian.
We have his birth certificate (with parent's names) but that doesn't help since the church hall that kept the records was bombed/burnt down in WW2.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

Very rare for people to be able to trace their line back past WW2, unless their line was already known.

That's not even remotely true.
Well, unless you're Irish.

Yeah, that's because most Irish records were accidentally destroyed when the Public Records Office was hit by a shell in 1922. Uh, presuming that you are talking about Ireland, of course.

All I know for sure about my family is back to my grandparents. Both sides have a "we don't talk about our past" modus operandi. Also, most grandparents, and dad, have remarried, so I have almost double the number of ancestors that I should, at least per family culture. It actually was difficult (growing up) to determine who is the blood relative and not because all were referred to as "grampa" or "gramma". Some of the grandparents by marriage were more "grandparent" than the blood relatives, too, making it even more weird.
When people ask me about my background, I have to say either I don't know, or my last name appears to be British, or I'm American. I played around on Ancestry for a while and was able to trace my last name back to England, when G-G-G-?-grampa came over on a boat, but it ended there. That grampa worked in the coalmines in Pennsylvania (as did his line) until dads-dad bailed on that and went to New Jersey to be a merchant marine. Dad grew up in Jersey, and joined the Navy to get out of there and improve his situation. It was really interesting to learn that the GTFO-and-better-thyself mutation seemed to occur with that grandpa, and has been very strong in my dad, me, and my sister.

The Last Chancer Who Survived

Nothing fancy for me, but I never looked into it too much.
Know nothing about my dad's side, always assumed he came from a long line of deadbeats
Mom's side... grandparents both moved here from Italy when they were little. I have a great uncle who was a cook in WWII, but I never tasted his cooking. My grandmother was madly in love with this fella that went off war, he came home to find out my grandfather stole her away while he was gone, and the rest is history.
So I'm 50% italian, 50% who knows what, but I was raised by the italian side and ate pasta for dinner almost every day of my childhood, yet my favorite kind of food is Mexican.

I only really know about my Grandparents, one was Estonian and fought during World War II on both sides as a Medic. Probably saved him from the horrors of the Russian revenge acts on Axis troops, my other Grandfather was in the air-force and was in Germany for a certain amount of time after the fall of Berlin.

I only really know stuff about my father's side of the family and then not much beyond my great grandfather who served in the Royal Navy during both world wars. Still though I don't know much about him aside from details of his career in the Navy. He saw action in the battle of Jutland, was a submariner at one point, after WW1 served for a while as a trainer at HMS Vernon, left the navy. He then returned following the outbreak of WW2. This time round he became involved in bomb disposal. Sadly that proved to be the death of him and he was killed by a German parachute mine in 1940, he was awarded the George Cross for his actions. Oddly I discovered a few months ago that someone had added him to wikipedia.
The only other family history I know is that my family name (in various archaic forms) goes back at least as far as 1066 and used to have a coat of arms associated with it.

My great grandpa was a navy-man during world war two.
My great great great great great (maybe longer) 3rd cousin on my father side is John Wilkes Booth. Yippee.
My family found a paper about one of my greatx5 grandfather was an orchard worker in Germany and he died when he fell from a tree and broke his neck.
My mother's side of the family is related to the Kennedys somehow.
