I see hostility coming from console gamers because the PC gamers insult console gamers repeatedly with their own sense of elitism.
... which is most often a result of console gamers bashing PCs and PC gamers because of their own elitism.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.
For me anyway, I really just don't like PC gaming. In my old age, it's really just all about comfort. I don't want to sit hunched over my PC for hours playing a game, when I sit hunched over a PC all day at work. Kickin back on the sofa with with a controller and is just more fun.
I just wish my PS3 had a way to automute all voice chat in online games, or even just disable it completely and save me a little bandwidth. I hate it. I don't want to hear you coughing, sneezing or picking your nose, nor do I want to hear your mom yelling at you, or your kid brother talking about Transformers, or your baby crying that you're ignoring because you'd rather get some frags then take care of him, or your pale-white-suburban-kid-talking-like-a-gangsta buddy telling you who to shoot and complaining about not having a turn.
I'm the reverse I would kill for a mouse and keyboard when playing on the xbox. I've been seriously been tempted by the XIM3, the control would be so much clearer. My only reason not getting one (other then cost) is I'd feel a bit of a deusche bag ...

You can buy console-controllers for PCs and plug them into your TV. However, many PC games can't customize for them properly, and you're stuck with wasd+mouse.
Most console games do not support a mouse. (PS3 internet surfing does, but it's a POS so the mouse-support means little)
HDTV's have a VERY REAL something called INPUT LAG (happens whether you use a computer or console) - I deal with it every time I turn on a game and switch my TV to "game mode". Most HDTV-owning gamers are unaware of it, but I'd like to raise awareness. Next time any of you fellow HDTV gamers are playing a FPS, switch your TV over to game-mode and see how much the reaction time improves. You'll thank me. (60" Sharp Aquos side-lit-led LCD).
It is a pain to get your computer running through your HDTV. Trust me. Anyone who thinks it's just "plug your HDMI into your computer and you're done" has never done it. It's more complex than it seems, and if you aren't computer savvy, call geek squad to come do it for you. Turn-offs: a long HDMI cable is effing expensive and you'll be tying up the computer AND the TV (rough for someone who has a g/f / wife / kids). AFAIK, there's no good couch - keyboard - mouse - table (for snacks and drinks) set up. You'll likely be looking over a desk until you get the game up, then going to the couch to play, then getting up and returning to the desk to change game-modes or answer messages or the like, then getting back up...
I've had every set-up you can think of. I now have a PS3 and a badass gaming computer. People talking about spending too much money on your computer - for $250 a year you can have a computer that can play any game on the market at either full graphic settings or near full graphic settings. RAM, Video Card, CPU - these are the 3 primary arenas you'll spend money on with your computer if you're a hardcore PC gamer. GO TO A COMPUTER SHOP AND NOT BEST BUY. I know a generous amount about computers - I do NOT know how every single vid card, ram chip, and CPU perform in speed tests or what the common gripes/lauds they get - these guys do. Find a good techie and stick with them.
My PS3? One-time investment of $350 and it's never failed me. Game-mode on my TV has the same reaction time as a CRT TV. Community is great. Friends and I have a great time playing. I meet good guys and gals to game with all the time. And I play all my movies on it with a simple use of a thumb drive! Torrent (non-copyrighted material only, of course) -> thumb drive -> PS3 -> 60 inches of awesomeness.
As I said up top, I love them both for what they do. PC I mostly use for Turn-based strat or RTS (I STILL play Dawn of War, yeah). FPS and RPGs I'll go for the ps3. I used to play MMO's on the PC, and if you're a primary MMO fan I can see why you'd prefer PC to console, but my advice? Get your darn PC hooked up to a HDTV already. No excuses. If you spend 10+ hours a week playing PC games and you do it with a monitor - why?
I starting gaming with the commodore 16 playing Spy v's Spy in 1985 when I was eleven.
Over the years if the argument hasn't been PC v's Consoles, its been this concole v's that console, and the cycle does indeed seem to go on forever.
In general I have tried to keep up to date and use all the consoles that come out and PC's since 2002, hence why I had an ill fated 3DO, Jaguar 64, and Mega CD over the years.
So what am I rambling about, I don't know, I'm getting old, get off my lawn hippy.
Can't folks just get along and enjoy gaming.
