...propably won't come any time soon. On the other hand consoles are measuring the size for their coffin. I found this interesting article about future of pc gaming. It's in finnish so you gotta go with crappy google translation: Consoles have time to get to play the most important platform for the 2000s in the first decade. It is widespread povattu (=knowledge of) PC gaming's death. Surprisingly, new statistics show that the 2010s has been the PC's time to counterattack. In the United States is now the leading PC gaming platform, and the situation remains. Pc gaming explain the rise in popularity of Facebook, many social games and the fact that digital downloading has quickly become more common as a method of distribution. Consumers faster broadband connections have made it possible that a gigabyte in size games can be sold to the bit in the form of services, such as high-grown popular on Steam. PC games digital distribution, the value already exceeds many times the physical distribution. Also the technique has begun to favor at the expense of computer consoles. Graphics cards capable of more detailed graphics than the console counterparts, and when the consumers' screens sizes have grown, can see the differences, sometimes painfully clear. The current generation of consoles is said to be nearing retirement. PC gaming is a joy to return to the top of news graphics cards manufacturers. PC games over consoles sales In the United States, playing computer games consoles have already passed in 2010, when the calculated net selling games. Business Break is a significant turn, as the PC games are on average significantly less expensive than console games. Contribute to raising the price level of PC gaming's popularity, as economic uncertainty leads consumers pihtailemaan(=become cheap). Previously, for example, in 2009 the console games were sold in the United States for more than 13 billion dollars and 8.9 billion in computer games. Last year, the PC game sales were already 10.8 billion, while consoles collapsed 9.3 billion taalaan. This year, the PC rolls 11.5 billion to 8 billion consoles waning. Next year the position is maintained. According to a recent estimate published Ignite Game Technologies (IGT) by the size of the various sources of published reports and forecasts. The main gauges are gaming the market focused on the monitoring of Newzoon and research firm the NPD's reports. IGT's koosteesta told Extreme Tech. Also research firm DCF Intelligence with Nvidia's recently painted a rosy picture of PC gaming, but this was a world-wide, while IGT examined only in the United States. It is estimated that PC gaming sales surpass consoles throughout the world until 2014. Computer and console games popularity to navigate to an end since the focus of two-anticipated game will appear: Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and 3 will be the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. What drek. If PC gaming did gain ground on consoles, it's because they were the first channel to offer cheap, digitally distributed titles for casual gamers. It was an innovative approach that made PC gaming relevant again, but Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all started to follow suit. Honestly, this whole "My platform is going to kill your platform!" stuff is juvenile. Core PC gaming will always be supported by a very dedicated, though smaller group of enthusiasts who love to push the envelope with their systems. Core console gaming will always be viable because of its accessibility from both a mechanical and logistical standpoint. Both platforms will benefit from the upswing in the casual gaming/digital distribution market. The only major industry shift that we've seen is that iOS and Droid powered smart phones have decimated the once thriving handheld gaming console market.

I'm probably the definition of a casual player and really couldn't give a rat's ass about optimized graphics and whatnot. I also prefer playing games from my couch drinking beers with my friends, which can be difficult to do on a PC.

I'm not so sure about that because I remember reading an article(might have been a steam news) in which Valve stated that Portal 2 out sold consoles on PC while L4D2 was more popular on consoles. And considering that Portal 2's marketing was more console oriented than pc.

Yeah I know, you can't imagine how hard it's to plug DVI and separate audio instead of HDMI to make our pc work properly on a projector.
Edit: Oops projectors dont come with built in audio so you have to use separate audio on consoles too. My bad.

This. I use an Xbox because I have all the games I want for my Mac on my Mac. And it's Minecraft.
Everything else usually has a Console Port, as well. And usually, the PC version of a 360 game is gak, while the Xbox is the superior gaming platform. I'm not saying this for all games, but for some, it's true.
Also, you don't have to get a new Xbox every three years or so.

Could you enlighten me Chowderhead how is the gakky console port worse than the console version? What are we comparing the console port here? To an non port game or the console version?
Many have stated that Dead Rising 2 is gakky console port. What do you think makes it worse than the actual xbox version?
Also one of my friend has a console. Currently his 8th xbox is in maintenance.

Cool. Good for your friend. I've had an Xbox for... Say... 3 years, and no RRoD. And if you do get an RRoD, Xbox will fix it for a low cost. Cheaper than buying a new part for a computer, actually.
What makes DR2 worse on the PC? First off, it was designed as an Xbox game. Second of all, Hack and Slashes/Fighting Games are never good on a Computer (See: Street Fighter 4 for the PC, or even Space Marine) because of the controls.

Ok I don't get your comment. It's like you are saying that GW gs is better than Galeforce9 gs because GW gs is especially designed for cidatel miniatures.
ps. I hope you don't hate me after that paperweight comment.

I bought my Xbox for 70 dollars. About the same price as your standard 2TB hard drive.
So please, stop trolling. The Xbox has it's purposes, as does the Wii and the PS3. And you know what? Here's another silly little puncture into your argument.

The hell? No! I don't know if it got lost in translation, but here we go again:
You build a game for the Xbox (Dead Rising). It's coded, scripted, and all well polished to work on the 360. So then, when they port it over to the PC, you get a Xbox game for a control system that isn't Xbox.

But how is it worse? Saying that it was xbox isn't an argument.
(Hypothetically speaking) ie. when they release minecraft it will have the same funtionality, same graphical quality and same content as pc version of minecraft (lets assume you can also use mouse and keyboard with xbox version) but it will have a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning. So xbox mc is the same as pc mc but with an extra gun. Wouldn't you consider that the xbox version is better than the pc version (even though mc was designed pc version on mind) because it has that extra gun? I would.

Fact: The PC has several things going for it.
1. You can customize and modify the hardware, more or less on a whim. This hardware modification increases the overall lifespan dn total performance of your PC. Consoles cannot do the same.
2. The rate of advance in technology is increasing. PC's are becoming increasingly powerful in increasingly smaller periods of time. As a result consoles will thus have a shorter theoretical lifespan, or a much higher base cost as the requirement for cutting edge technology is more necessary to maintain the lifespan.
3. Sony and Microsoft have increased the cycle times for their consoles for a wide variety of reasons. This means a console that was only expected to last 5 years (in terms of technological obsolescence) will have to try to compete w/ PC's for another 5 years. Both the PS3 and the 360 are already looking dated when compared to even 'roughly average' gaming rigs (although that might be a symptom of the porting process, esp. on the PS3 where games often fail to take full advantage of the hardware due to devs trying to save time by keeping it at the level of the lowest common denominator, i.e. the 360). The Wii U is reportedly being released w/ performance levels on par w/ or slightly better than either the PS3 or the 360.
4. PC games are on average $10 cheaper than console games.
And I'm sure there are others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind. Does this mean that consoles are going to die? NEGATIVE GHOSTRIDER!
Consoles have a lot of things going for them, they are, in concept, a much better gaming platform than the PC will ever be, due to their primary function being the facilitation of gaming. A PC, even those custom built for gaming purposes, are not gaming optimized machines. They are the sum of their parts, most of which are not designed to be gaming optimized. Overall this puts several constraints on how PC games are developed to make full utility of this less than optimal hardware, and the software related to its function. This difference has someone lessened as of late, as consoles have become slightly more PC like in their design and engineering, and hardware/software developers have worked to make PC's more of a general purpose tool.
In any case, what consoles need to remain relevant is an innovative approach that will override some of these deficiencies. I'm not the Steve Jobs-esque savior of the consoles, but if I had to guess, that innovation will come in the form of upgradeable hardware ala PC's. I.E. - Every x years Sony or M-soft or whoever will release a new hardware package to upgrade the systems specs, keeping certain key elements the same, but replacing things such as the processor/gpu, etc. for y dollars. This is an inelegant brute force solution, that basically makes consoles into PC's that are almost entirely dedicated to gaming, but that seems to be the natural progression of the concept anyway. In any case, this will alleviate the life cycle issues that are currently inherent to the platform.

I don't really get where the idea that PCs are a money pit and you have to upgrade every time a new game comes out comes from. I'm pretty sure this argument spawned from angry trolls somewhere in the depths of the internet and has persisted because of fanboy love.
I just built a new PC for more intense gaming, but my old computer, built in 2006 still runs everything on high settings with dual monitors plugged in and chugging at 1440x900 on each. The only reason I built a new one is I wanted some more power for graphic design and 3D modelling/mapping. Each was built for a little less than $1000 with monitors, etc. included.
Anywho, yeah, some games are better on consoles, others on PC. Dead Rising 2 was a crappy port, but if you plugged in a controller it worked fine for the most part. Some games like Rock Band, Mario Kart and other games should be played with friends in the same room belong on a big TV with a console plugged in, but in general it could easily go either way.
Also, to whoever said hack-and-slashes are better on consoles...are you high? Diablo, Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege, Sacred, etc. are mostly still ONLY on PCs and sometimes Macs.

Huh. Diablo is a RPG, Sacred was a RPG, and everything else there was a RPG.
This is a Hack-and-Slash (In my book. We could just have different firing signals.)
This is a RPG:

Calling Diablo an RPG is like calling Penumbra a first person shooter...
