I think it was half of first company.
Those poor IF's
They get picked on a lot when Marines have to die in droves.
There was that Iron Cage thing, and in the UM Movie isn't there a whole bunch of dead IF?

I remember one with the Mantis Warriors versus 'nids, I don't know about Astartes deaths but I was ready to self harm after the 1st two chapters, never even finished the book. I think the Marine/ Olius Pius/ custode/IF or BA that charged HORUS infront of the Emperor was pretty epic fail, what part of the Emperor saying "I got this one..." didn't he understand, plus if the Devil and God were having a fist fight I for one would not wade in shouting "Break it up". Lucky he did mind, or else the Emperor would have let his eldest run around forever without chastising him.

The bit where Ollanius Pius stood in the path of Horus was when the Emperor had been wounded by the Warmaster and Horus was moving in to finish the Emperor off. Ollanius Pius stood in his way. Obviously this was a stupid thing to do as Horus ripped him apart but it did give the Emperor time to attack & kill Horus - Pius was a breathing space if you will, a bloody, messy, gore strewn breathing space admittedly, but he did his bit. It's why he's a saint & honoured by the Imperial Guard.

I'm still laughing at the poor Space Wolf being nudged over a cliff by a grot. We kept a 'Grot in a box' in Dark Heresy, for pure devilment, until we had to turf the grot out to put the remains of the corrupted techpriest in the box (don't ask). As for ignominious Astartes deaths? I've seen several over the years in tabletop games but none to compare with what others have posted.

Over 20 typoes in the first hundred pages. I got to chapter 5 of the second book and just couldn't take it anymore.

I however did make it through to the end of this abomination book please don't sue me for slander gw but iirc they spider mutant sarpedeon(sp) gets bitchslapped half to death, right at the end.

The Soul Drinker series is great to skim, but not read in depth

I think any marine that gets killed by a Gets Hot rule is a pretty crap way to go.
'Astrius shoot that Ork Nob'
BLUE FLASH & MASSIVE BANG
'Brother Bannon shoot that Ork Nob'

Why waste all that training and discipline, medical investment and time making an Astartes to give him a gun that has 1/6 chance of blowing up in his face?

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Former Imperial Fists 1st Captain Kletus, when he and a good portion of the 1st Company teleported into rocks and/or over cliffs, due to Chaos disrupting their teleporting coordinates.

I mean, seriously. For 1st Company Vets, decked out in the best the Space Marines have to offer, dying because you got atomised into rock is a pretty ignoble death. First Captain, no less. That's like, the guy who's most likely to be Chapter Master (I presume)

Just all of the 5th Company, bar a chaplain and a Marine, who both die by the end of it anyway.

I'm gonna pretend I never read it. Like the Great Gatsby.
Ouch. The Great Gatsby is a classic. The problem is, they force it down the throats of high school kids who can't appreciate it.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
