Really, if you can only sympathise with a squeaky-clean, 'better than you' faction, you'll need to look in another setting.

It's not that I can only sympathise with them, I would just rather that for a different army then my DE.

Not really the Tau are currently doing the slippery slope thing but its taking time to hit them fully.

Stated by Grey Templar:The Ward of the Codices
"It began, with the writing of the Great Codices,
2 were given to the Eldar. Immortal, Capricious, and most farsighted of all,
2 also to Chaos. Traitorous, Deceitful, Servants of the Dark Gods,
3 to the Xenos races. T'au, Orks, and Necrons. the Young, the Beast, and the Spiteful,
7 to the race of men. Servents of the God Emperor, the Inheritors of the Galaxy.

But they were all of them, decieved. for another Codex was written…
In the Land of Ward'or, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Matthew wrote in secret, a Master Codex, to rule all the others. One by one, all the armies of the other Codices fell to the power of the Codex, and from this Darkness, none could see hope.

But there were some, who resisted. a Last Alliance of Men and Xenos took up arms against the forces of Ward'or and on the Slopes of Mount Doom they fought for the freedom of 40k."

They're a young race, they will learn the fine art of douchebaggery soon enough

If they do, I will lose interest in them entirely. 40K could use some competently decent people, if only as a foil for everyone else's rottenness.

Has Realife ever truly had in a majority competent decent people that didn't do bad things here and their in pursuit of their goals. RL is like this, 40k just takes it further. Once maybe Humanity and Eldar weren't such douches but circumstances made them bad just as it will make the Tau bad in time.

Yeah, the thing is that just isn't the idea 40k was designed around. I'm not a Tau hater and personally I'm not uber opposed to the idea, but if you look at the races 40k initially had, everyone is out to kill each other. If you have too many peaceful races, then there might be more than war in the 40k universe...

I know. It must seem like I don't, since I keep suggesting things like this, and that's understandable. There are numerous planets in the 40K universe that are essentially peaceful, if sometimes flawed or even "tainted"-- pleasure worlds, unexplored worlds, not to mention Ultramar. There are other things besides outright war, but these aren't the point of emphasis.

I don't know; I just get annoyed when 40K loses its sense of humor and heavy metal attitude and collapses into undiluted grimdark, by official account or the insistence of fans-- there's no fun in that for me. I need something to root for, not just something to mourn the loss of.

The Tau are by no means good at all.

The only real difference between them and everyone else is that they ask you to join them before they start killing you. Sure, every Tau-owned system is basically Ultramar, but that doesn't change their ruthlessly pragmatic actions in war (Though they do frown upon wanton and needless slaughter).

The rumors of Ethereal mind control have existed since even 3rd edition.

"Better than everyone else" isn't exactly "good," and even then some people in the Imperium are as decent as the Tau are.

Yeah, but when you compare them to everyone else, better becomes good.

They sure did my good sir! They are now hugthirsty robots bent on uniting the universe for some epic cuddles.

Not quite but they have some pretty lame emotions/goals that dont fit in with the fit in with the old fluff at all. Trading/Making alliances with other races etc. Most uncool.

Dont forget they also fist-pump Dante.

As for the OPs question...

Slaan

AdMech are separate from humanity and although they work together, often look down upon humans.

I'm going to ammend my original question to what it is now. The first one makes it sound like I want a 'nice' race, but I really just want a flavorful army.

This is kinda a loose way to describe Eldar and Orks to be similar...

Though, next you could say "they both use guns..."

Well you took the words right out of my mouth . They are similar because their trading policy with humans are the same. Some clans and some Craft Worlds will trade with humans, but most will steal the stuff if they need it.

Or in Biel'tan's case murder everyone and then steal it.

The 40k universe is a lot like the news. Yeah, good things happen, probably more often then the bad things, but the bad things are the things that get talked about, for whatever reason.

However there is about 60 million years of history between the Enslaver plague and the Age of the Imperium. You can make whatever the dickens you want, however you want it, although I'm not sure how people would react to playing a completely new army that isn't really in the GW fluff.

I'll probably use the Eldar codex and make up a race. I don't really plan on using them for tourney's, only playing with my friends

I agree, I kind of wish it wasn't made out to be quite so grimmdark, or there were some actual heroes. I like having a clearly defined good guy and bad guy, rather than just people fighting, its easier for me to root for somebody or cackle maniacally about being evil and killing the good guys. It doesn't really get me down though, I've never found myself mourning the loss of any Necron Tomb Worlds...(I play Necrons)
