Synister_Intent wrote:I have read all the posts and I appreciate all the words of encouragement and all the advice. Another thing that has been gnawing at the back of my mind is she said that this hobby is a waste of money with not return on my investment and for that I am an idiot. Is there any truth to this. If I build an army can I turn around and sell it and get most of my money back or is that unheard of in this hobby?

Truth? Few hobbies will garner a RoI. That's kind of the nature of them. Even a stamp/coin collection really won't net you much money beyond what you put in to it, at least, on average. That doesn't mean you shouldn't have them though.

Truth: Her 10+ pairs of shoes with matching purses have less RoI than your toy soldiers do. Unless you've mangled your armies fiercely, you'll generally be able to get at least 50% price out of them. You can't garage sale shoes for more than 5 or 10 bucks.

There's also a creative need that is fulfilled with wargaming. You're not just a blind consumer sucking down the latest fashions; you're actually producing something, using craftmanship and skill. I might be overselling the hobby a bit there, but that's what it is for me. No matter how bad I might be at it, it's something I made, and I'm proud of it, damnit. If someone belittled me for that, they obviously didn't care about me enough for me to warrant myself caring about them back.

Lol.

A PS3 and half a dozen games is cheaper.

And it's only cheaper if you buy your plasticrack direct retail.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

You seem to have a nice balance, there is nothing wrong with it.

I also agree with all the comparisons to sports, double stands are a funny thing aren't they This is a great video all about that:

Sounds like OP's ex was butthurt because he likes something she doesn't. It happens. Seriously though, getting people like that out of your life is always a good thing. You don't need people hanging around you criticizing you all the live long day.
