Sorry, Paul, if you're saying Apple and BMW don't have sales or promotions... they do.
(Well laid out points)
Very well written post, exalted.
And Paul, don't you mean Porsche rather than BMW?
(Drum roll please..)
I think that sales and the like are more necessary from the likes of Mantic, or Infinity, because they are trying to muscle in on the market place. However, I think part of the problem is that
GW still views itself as being king in a market consisting of just themselves. Rick Priestly said as much in an interview he made when he left the company, that there is absolutely no recognition amongst the higher echelons within the company that there is any threat from the likes of Privateer Press. And this is despite numerous developers and ex-members of
GW staff moving on to the likes of Privateer Press, Battlefront and Mantic, all of which are steadily increasing in size and are taking customers from
GW.
I think until
GW recognises that it has to compete against these companies, give its customers a reason they should continue to play
GW games beyond 'it's what everyone else plays, so I have to also' (a situation that is changing) then of course we won't see any sales. They have to acknowledge there is a reason for offering better deals to the customers, but at the moment they are myopic in terms of how the market is changing around them.
As far as I'm concerned, this is also reflective in all other aspects of the company, they have essentially gone into neutral and are prepared to coast along on the efforts of previous successes, and it's why there has been a complete absence of anything risky or trying to break new ground since the release of Lord of the Rings. Of why each new update of the rules is a 0.1 change on the previous edition, and motivated entirely by the knowledge that the customer base will be forced to buy a new rulebook or boxset because they have no other choice. It will be interesting how long this state of affairs will continue for in light of steadily dropping sales and loss of market share.
