Im a CSM person, collecting a display army that will have abit from every legion. So slamming (loyalist) marines is kind of required of me But in truth, i feel that theres TOO many MEQ armies. IMO, Loyalist marines should be moved into a single codex, with the notable exceptions of blood angels and Space wolves. 3 codexes is still pushing it, though

I play Ultramarines, Orks, Tyranids and IG so I can mix up games completely byhaving armies that are very different. PLaying 4 varieties of marines is dumb.
My brother plays SW, BA, Ultra and BT. So boring.

I play Tau...I'd like to start Eldar, but I can't afford making two armies :/ The only problem I have with Marines (and their Chaos cousins) is that most people at my FLGS play them EDIT: And I like to play Tau due to their clean, sleek, hi-tech look, and the challenge it takes to play them sometimes

Pestilent Plague Marine with Blight Grenade

I use to play space marines, then I played chaos. Then I started getting my ass beat by the space wolves. 6 Years went by.
I decided to go way different and play IG. I liked the idea of hordes of men being thrown at their enemies. Then I played space wolves again.............
Needless to say it's been a learning experience. Waves and Waves has turned into Squads and Squads so the marines can't wipe out an entire 30 man platoon in 2 turns with a single assault unit.
Marines are nasty troops, they have rules that give them an advantage in nearly everything, and their special characters are walking tanks with rediculous gear.
I explained to a friend that didn't play W40k once that they were huge armored soldiers that were genetically enhanced. He asked, "So the un armored guys are quicker?". "No" I replied, "Their armor can magically make them move really really fast."
It may be the biggest flaw in the game that hugely armored models have an initiative of 4 while the necrons, who are similarily armored have an initiative of like 2......

I play, eldar, and I dislike marines because the codicies stopped me picking up necrons when I started(before the updates ofc)

Started with Crimson fists and moved into old blood angels.
Started orks after that, Deff Skullz theme.
Moved back to the Blood Angels, DoA theme.
Now Tau with an Urbna theme. They are also my favorite army to play because of how different they are, and they happen to be my best.

Got into the Game with Necrons(about 800 points worth back when 800 points of Necrons was a Lord, 3 scarab Bases, and two 12 man squads of warriors.) because back in Middle School, everyone thought they(as in themselves, not the army) were dark and deep when really you were nothing more than a whiny wuss. Eventually, the whole "I'm evil because it's cool" phase wore off and I didn't really like the Necrons afterwards (not saying everyone that plays Necrons is like that. Just every Middle Schooler that played Necrons prior to the 5th edition Codex )
Sold them and Started Tau when 5th started. Got a full 2k with them painted and all. Liked them due to their Fluff and Models
Started Daemons( kept my Tau) since 6th is just around the corner and you need a New Army every Edition. . I have my crazy good(ish) Teched up shooty army. Now I needed my crazy evil Space Magic assaulty army to balance everything out. What better choice than an army that is made of the Space magic?

I don't knock the Marines since I got one that I do play. but lets see what I am playing of late.
I play Tau because I feel sorry them. but I feel better running about with 9 broadside battle suits
I play Tyranids for I "feel the pain" of losing so badly but I do it anyway to get that rare win and get a chance to run around the store with my walker.
I play Smurf's for I can "taste the rainbow" as well as the "Angry Marines"
I play Chaos Marines because of Commissar Kkarn
http://1d4chan.org/wiki/File:Angry_Marine_Smackdown.jpg
I put my money on Kharn though.
I play Necrons because, well because I been playing them when they only came out in metal terminator like models.
I play Eldar because of their arrogance and their firepower.
I play Dark Eldar because of their depravity.
I play a Daemonnette Army because I just love placing +100 models in 1500 point game and watching my opponent eye balls twitch.
I play my Space Wolves because why have 15 missle launchers in a 1500 point army when you can cram in 8 more.
I play Orks because they are fun to play.
I have 15 different armies, what I don't play yet are IG and GK.

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".
Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?
You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

Necrons were my first army. I wanted to play them, since I thought an Army that's models can stand back up was the coolest thing. Now that they have gotten their update, I find I am really enjoying the codex, and new personality that they bring to 40K.
I started my Eldar, because I wanted a Fast, mobile army. So, Natural choice was Eldar.
I really wanted an army I could play Hordes with, so I got Tyranids. I really like the models. I just wish their codex was a bit more up to snuff.
For Fantasy, I've got a Tomb Kings army, Mostly for model appeal. I really had a tough time choosing my Fantasy Army that I wanted, but Tomb Kings won me over in the end.

Tough Tyrant Guard

I started as Tau because at the time mechs and railguns seemed awesome. Played them for a year or so, then picked up tyranids a few weeks after the new codex dropped. I guess I just have a pension for punishment when it comes to wh40k armies... Though recently I did start a Sanguinary Guard BA army, which has some interesting strategies involved. For the most part I chose these armies because aside from myself, of the 25 to 30 people who play 40k regularly, there are 3 who don't have space marines. Interestingly enough, our armies, if combined in an apocalypse game, would likely outnumber the marines point-wise around 4:1. Yeah... what us xenos players generally lack in competitive codicies we make up for in having an overwhelmingly large army of mediocre minis . Also I dont think i would be able to paint more than 30 space marines before wanting to heave them out a window. This coming from a person who is about 1/2 way through painting his hormagaunts, and hasn't even started on termagants. 40 down, 50 to go....

Wouldn't say I 'slam', as you worded it, Marines, but they don't appeal to me much. I've never been interested in 'super-soldiers' or 'super-humans' - I find comics boring and dull, as well as being full of deus ex machina plots.
So it's not really surprising that the huge, massively strong & tough Marines with their super-fast reflexes and various implants, don't appeal that much. They're far more interesting than any other 'super-human/soldier' I've ever come across but beyond a casual curiosity, they aren't my cup of tea.
However the ordinary humans of the Imperial Guard really interest me. Thrown into conflicts against enemies often bigger, stronger than the poor, hapless humans, and often equipped with better armour and more powerful weapons than the Guardsman has, you have to admire the sheer audacity of humanity as it grips on with its fingertips, grimly stating that it's not going anywhere! I love that. As such the Imperial Guard has always been my favourite army. I've never wanted to play as xenos (except Orks, but thats understandable - Orks are awesome), only recently taken an interest in Chaos (not to collect - hate spikey models. Could do traitor Slaaneshi Guard), but I always come back to my Guardsmen as they are the one army I absolutely love.
