So many people Slam marines for being vanilla, or being over marketed, or whatever reason you want to insult genetically modified and enhanced versions of us. I prefer marines simply because of Master Chief...it's like I field an army of Spartans

Which armies do you play then? And why?

Attacking anyone for playing a different army than you is silly. Unless that person plays Marines because they like Halo.

Just kidding.

In my cave, lying down and waiting for you...

I play four armies:

Space Marine Ultramarines
My starting army. I was drawn in by the fluff and by the fact that I like blue. The army is till really great and fun to play.

Biel-Tan Eldar
After marines, I wanted something more colourful and challenging to play with. I bought one WD which was about Eldar, and I was instantly drawn in by their gorgeus miniatures and rules.

Warriors of Chaos Khorne
I wanted to get into WHFB so I picked the army with the best fluff and miniatures IMHO. WoC had them both, and I have never backed out from starting them.

LoTR Rohan
I started this army too fastly. I dont like the game, but models are really nice and I liked the movies & books.

Warmachine Cryx
I wanted to start WM. And cryx instantly appealed to me. Dirty tricks, good fluff and nice miniatures.

As can be seen, I usually start an army if it looks good and has nice fluff. I dont give a crap about power gaming. To me this hobby is just for fun :3.

I play Orks, and the greatest thing in life is to crush the marines, to see them driven from the table, and to hear the lamentation of their players.

Ued to play Daemonhunters before the new codex came out, then I dropped it like it was on fire.

You ask me my reasons? Because they are dangerous. They are a weapon in the Emperor's arsenal, nothing more, and like any weapon they are beneficial whilst they remain under control. But when that weapon becomes uncontrolled it become dangerous and needs to be... decommissioned. I play Inquisition.

Plus Daemons, and Imperial Guard (sanctioned by the Inquisition). Plus also probably Dark Eldar soon. But the Inquisition is my true love. Oh, and I have about 1K of Marines too, because, let's face it, Marines are cool.

I play Orks because they are forgiving and fun to paint, I liked them in DoW, my friend and I bought AoBR and split it in half, so I got a starter, and they have funny/awesome fluff. I was actually going to buy Necrons when I started in late August, but the combination of AoBR and waiting for 2 months to start Necrons means i'll just Ebay them when the bandwagoners are tired of them.

I agree, 5ed chaos is terrible.

As far as Warmachine I was torn between Khador and Retribution.
I have a small Khador force coming from a trade, but have a massive Retribution order placed The Mages are wicked running around with power fists

Khorneetnch CSM - Because I like Chaos, and Khorne, and Tzeentch.
Eldar - Because I want to.
Tau - See 'Eldar'

Lizardmen - Because they're dinosaurs led by a bloated magical toad.
High Elves - Because they're elves.
Tzeentch WoC (since before 8th made them awesome) - See 'Khorneentch CSM', but only use the first and last reasons.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Imperial guard because i got sick of getting shot to death

Tyranids because....genestealers are awesome.

On moon miranda.

Imperial Guard because I like tank battallions and big guns and the fact that even generally when I lose, by any fluff measure I've probably still won given most opponents (e.g. oh, I lost the battle along with a company of guardsmen and a lance of armor, but their irreplaceable Farseer and his entire entourage along with 3 Exarch's were killed, GREAT VICTORY. Or, oh I lost eight tanks and uncounted guardsmen, but their chapter master lies dead along with a third of their first company veterans and two ancient land raiders and a venerable dreadnought, GREAT VICTORY.) It's also a fun feeling to lose 30 dudes and 4 tanks in a turn and look at the board and say "eh, I've got more" as opposed to something like SM's where such losses would be irrecoverable. Casualties are acceptable, Failure is not.

I play Eldar because they have cool tanks.

I play Chaos Space Marines because I like the idea of the bitter traitor who fights and survives purely on hate, who thinks *they* were the ones betrayed, who will undertake any measure of damnation and self destruction to see their enemies destroyed.

I play Tyranids because I like the Warrior, Carnifex, Tyrant, Hive Guard and Trygon models.

I play Tau because they have cool tanks and suits.

starting to see a trend here?

I play the orks. I don't want to be the marine boyz and their larger-than-life super-heroics, where even the cheapest model in the force represents a veteran of a half century of combat. I want to tear them down and stomp on them. I want to be the ugly horde, the unwashed mass of fury and thunder that can take 3 to 1 losses because there's so many of them, who can take heroes and beauty and the mightiest warriors in the galaxy and smash them.

BA - played them for 7 years now, through the PDF times and now to the new.
Just like the different ways you can run them.

Crons - Not played them aslong as BA, but still run a unit of the origional destroyers

Nids - Was my 1st army, have been updating them as i go.

Daemons - Played since they were released as a stand alone army.

Played a ton of other armies off and on, but these are the ones ive stuck with.

I play Sisters becuase I like the look as an army and I love the fluff even more. They are my first army and will likely remain so.

I also play Daemons also to be on the opposite side of the equation plus I really dig those old Diaz daemonettes (mounted or otherwise) in a non-perverted sort of way. I must have thing for girl minis, but I am a glutton for punishment with my all metal armies.

I've got a small Grey Knight army becuase I always wanted to play Daemonhunters but did not want to pay for them and have a 3rd metal army. I think I am really going to enjoy painting them once I get around to it.

I've got an Imeprial Guard army that I orginally bought for a supplement to my Sisters in Apocalypse but has taken on a life of its own. I'm really enjoying buildign all of those tanks.

Then there is my Space Marine army, but I got them solely for a small Raven Guard force because I like the boys in black.

I play guard because it seems the most traditional/contemporaneity unit in 40k. I like how they look much realistic and comparable to modern armies.

I play SS panzergrenadiers for several reasons.
A: No one wants to play the Germans, thus I want too
B:They are really good elite troops
C:They come in Infinitival, Mechanized, and Tank companies

3 Ultramarines Armies, BA, SW and DA have all graced my painting table at one stage or another. I just like the mini's, no other reason! I've just placed an order of Tau for the first time, the reason? I love the Pirahna mini... That's it...

I believe it's from Conan the Barbarian.

I play Space Wolves, Tyranids, Lizardmen and have a few Bretonians kicking about. I've also got a fairly large evil LOTR army, but I haven't touched them in ages (and I'm planning on selling them and the Bretonians at some point).

You're right. But I think they stole it from Ghenghis. Still a great line.

Marines were my introduction to 40k. Made my own chapter and taught myself how to play. They're a great race to introduce someone to 40k through, given that they tend to be the most balanced of armies.

Sold them and now I play IG. Love the average Joe grabbing a lasgun and staring down a Tyranid horde.

I've played

Imperial Guard because I liked WW2 and the whole starship troopers vibe that Cadians give off

Black Templars because they're crusader marines in space

Chaos Marines because of the customizability of 3.5, its place as the ultimate evil and because I liked much of the fluff boost they got around the Eye of Terror campaign.

Tyranids, because I've seen aliens, starship troopers and wanted an army that looked like flood. So unstopable scythy hoarde of death with giant monsters has a lot of appeal.

Tau empire, because I enjoyed the animae elements and because they seemed removed like nids and guard from the fantasy influenced armies. I also wanted to try a shooty army after such a long run with my chaos marines and nids.

Dark Eldar-excellent models with lots of detail, a fresh playstyle of glasshammer that I was unfamiliar with and I kind of liked the whole tongue in cheek element to them.
