I play TK in fantasy. I have always loved Egyptian history and style. This army has it and more.

I also play Necrons. Good fluff, fun models, plus its like future TK similar heirarchy, plus pyramids. Why the hell not?

Space Wolves. I love their background (pre 5th Edition Codex), their character and their not-pretty-but-heroic methods. What 1st drew me to them was when I saw this image. It just made me want to play them:

I also collect Chaos Space Marines (I don't deny I like the idea of astartes), but they're mainly for practicality and variation. I dabble in Eldar also.

Enlist as a virtual Ultramarine! Click here for my Chaos Gate (PC) thread.

"It is the great irony of the Legiones Astartes: engineered to kill to achieve a victory of peace that they can then be no part of."
- Roboute Guilliman

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Started with Necrons over a year ago because it was the one army that no one else played. And quickly grew to love them, models and fluff. With the new codex, there are things that irk me, but I'm staying with them.

Also have played CSM, giving those to my bro probably

I started off with Ultramarines many years ago, then gave them away when I got older, then came back to the hobby after more than a decade away. I've nearly completed my Ultramarine 4th Company, I've got another army of Imperial Guard, the Screaming Beagles, and then my off shoot army of Tyranids, Hive Fleet Jumangi because all the people I play with are scared of Nids!

I started out with Dark Angels back in 3rd edition with the box set because at the time they where the shootiest space marine army. Fell in love with the background, especially the Deathwing. A little miffed at the new codex, but still have 'em and love 'em.

I restarted my Imperial Guard after returning to the game in 5th ed, I had always like the IG and the new codex was a vast improvement over the old one.

Just got the codex to start Grey Knights using all the models i purchased back when they where the Deamonhunters. They are a bit ridiculous in spots, but all in all i like the background and the codex.

The only army i don't really like is the Ultramarines, a constant dislike thet grew even greater with the release of C:SM (all marines want to be them, bah!).

My only gripe against space marines that there are too many people at my fLGS who play them, and it gets boring after a while facing the same army.

Started playing as Imperial Guard because they are regular human beings, they don't need power armor or genetic modification, just a lasgun and a prayer. I read some Gaunt's Ghosts before deciding to name my army, having them originate from a planet the Ghosts called "soft", the Guard are on a mission to save their planet's name, and include veteran "police" and relatively untrained criminals.

And my Tau who only exist for style points as they are based on one of my favorite, alien armies of all time, the Covenant!

I'm one of those guys that finds SM dull/overly saturated. Though I can see why others want to play it and have no problem with those who do (it's all about personal preference).

Personally I play Chaos. I say Chaos instead of Chaos Space Marines because I have a 5,800 point Horde of CSM, Daemons, Traitor Guardsmen, Mutants, etc.. Not exactly a competitive army but oh well.

Have recently begun Eldar. Hard to describe why they exactly appeal to me, especially since not too long ago I hated them.

I plan Necron and possibly Ork armies in the future. Who knows, maybe even a small GK strike force.

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts
2,000pts

Same reason i started guard. I find them more couragous then the the marines with their power armor and super powered genetics. And that out of all the 40k armies they are the most human, and look the most like an actual sci fi army, well at least cadians do.

@totalwar i find that comment funny, seeing as the novel starship troopers where the inspiration
For space marines. Then the movie goes and appears to rip off the imperial guard.

In fanasty i play bretonnia, because i do like the chrivic knights, only i like them where they belong, in fanasty. Not Knights in space.

UltraMarines (yes i play them and i notice i might get some flack for this) but yeah i still dis them and go on about how 'vanilla' they are cause lets be honest they are the most marketed army the most played army AND generaly the most successful army that is not a good combination when you play against people that realy dislike loosing

The only marine type army I have is the Grey Knights, but Iv never really thought of them as marines, they're just better lol.

One main reason I collect the armies I have is because of the fluff for them, marine fluff hasnt really interested me much.

Been Around the Block

I play an Iyanden Eldar army and Necrons.

I actually like space marines as a concept and enjoy most of the novels involving them - which is most of the novels, period. And herein lies my only gripe - the oversaturation of all things marinesesque.

I feel that 40k would be more popular and appeal to a wider swath of the gaming community (and perhaps even the general public) if support was given equally to each faction.

Not everybody is attracted to the idea of an army of Jay Cutlers in technologically-advanced plate mail who largely lack the humanizing characteristics needed to be more than one-dimensional characters. That's not a knock against people who do like that sort of thing, hell I love me some brainless 80s action flicks as much as the next guy.

But from a business standpoint, overpromoting space marines to the point of neglecting the other factions has limited GW's chance to appeal to other tastes (eg eldar with elf-lovers, tau with Gundam Wing fans etc) because such armies have not regularly been kept competitive and their fluff is not as deeply delved into by Black Library and sub-faction-specific codex releases.

By appealing to a wider market, they would make more money and we as gamers would have more people to play against, more hobbyists contributing innovative conversions, more bloggers writing insightful reflections and the experience would be enriched for all.

But this isn't happening for the above reasons, hence why I "slam the marines."

I don't hate marines, for 40k they're a fun concept. But devoting nearly half the codex's to marine varients is just too much and they have IMO slowed down the pace of change. We're close to 6th edition and have had only 3 5th edition non-Imperial armies; with all but one of the Imperial armies being marines. (WD does not count ). It might be good for money, it might even give them neat mini releases to space out large scale releases like necrons and dark eldar; but with a new edition it means we'll have another round of vanilla, guard even before we get to redoing black templars and dark angels.

My first army is da Orkz!!! Dems da bestest!!! I enjoy converting and with orks it's really easy (mistakes can look good) They were always so interesting with their weird weapons and stuff. They have lots of personality and I enjoy yelling WAAAAGH every time I charge into close combat

I also play Sisters. I love their fluff and the fact in 13 years of gaming I've only seen one other pure sob player and a mixed Inquisition player.

Finally I play Arbites. I love Arbites and I have waited a very long time to be able to field an army of them now. Also the 2ed Arbite models are my most favorite GW mini ever.

I find marines to be too common. I play 7 out of 10 games against marines. There are so many marine players that when I open up my case to pull out a non marine army everybody gets really excited because they get to play something different. Never had a shortage of opponents simply because they wanted to play a non marine army.

I think GW should just change 40k to "Space Marine Training Mission" because most games I see are just marine vs marine.
