Eye of Terra.

Dr. Mobius in Forbidden Planet warns "One does not stare into the face of the gorgon and live!" as he shows his visitors the wonders of the Krell furnaces and we see only a kaleidoscope of changing shape and color. Not completely analogous I know, but I imagine in my minds eye the same kind of effect. Something beyond direct human comprehension.

Perhaps as a godlike creature, it can appear as it wishes or, it appears as something the observer can more readily identify with based on what they might wish or expect to see. Much like the Emperor seemed to do on occasion.

I believe, however, it was the Necrons who created the "vessels" which contain the C'Tan and allow them to interact with other beings. So I imagine the vessel might, in fact, look like something identifiable to the Necrontyr. In the original fluff, the C'Tan were immense amorphous intelligences and the Necrontyr only discovered their existence once they had achieved fantastic levels of technology themselves.

What if, however, the Dragon lost its Necrontyr "vessel" due to the Emperor and now resides solely within the chamber on/in Mars which is a rough facsimile of that Necron containment. Perhaps this is why the Dragon communicates via dreams and such as it can't do much else in its semi-amorphous state. Done purposely, of course, by the Emperor in order to control the dragon yet not disipate it beyond its usefulness.

I would imagine this is why it is often see as slumbering. It is at the limit of its ability to interact with mortals.

Just some thoughts.

Scyzantine Empire

The last Necron codex detailed a single necron ship making it to Mars and landing briefly before taking off and disappearing. I wonder if Trazyn was paying a visit to the crystal chamber, determining that the Dragon was safe where he was or maybe capturing him in a tesseract and replacing him with some Necron AI to infiltrate the Mechanicus and bring it to it's knees upon receiving a coded alert...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

chaos0xomega wrote:I think people take the name "Dragon" too literally. It is a title, not a descriptor of its appearance. Neither the Nightbringer nor the Deceiver look like "night" or "deception". Also worth noting that the term Dragon can be used to describe something without it actually having any of the features commonly associated with said mythical creature.

Read Mechanicum.

Long before the age of the Imperium or even the Great crusade, the Emperor fought the void dragon on Earth and it pretty much looked like a dragon. Whether it was actually his real "outfit" or just a disguise, however, we don't know.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.
