Leman Russ can shoot all it's weapons, including any ordinance and still move 6 inches. Not alot of tanks can do that.

Incorrect, they may fire an additional weapon while moving within 6 inches (2 main + all defensive [strength 4 or lower])

Yes I have, a good number of times.

Their big tank hunting guns are destructive
The few they have yes, but are more limited in number than IG's and aren't any more powerful than what the IG can bring and are either very limited by mobility or range.

the Necrons match the IG in range with a few exceptions
Most of their weapons are 24" or less, relatively few have a greater range.

and you never really need longer then 72" range.
True, but

The doomsday cannon destroys infantry
Which isn't exactly what's required and for nearly 200pts IG can do it *way* better between Griffons, Hydras, Leman Russ tanks, etc.

and the Tesla weapons are pretty all purpose
All limited to 24", and only the big one has any AT capability to speak of.

I would have to say the before the new Necron codex it would have been Necrons and IG. everytime I have gone up against them with my Necrons, it was not to impressive. During a 10,000 pt apocalypse game IG and BA vs my Necrons is was actually rather sad. They did focus EVERYTHING against my monoliths and C'Tan. About 20 lascannons, 4 hydraflaks, 3 Vendettas, Baneblade, and 3 Leman Russ'(s) they only managed a imobilization and 2 wounds on the C'Tan.
Sure I was $&*%ing my pants for a second but every roll I got a little more combfortable. Must have been a bad day though. I think it was just funny when I Vod a group of 10 Imortals behind a Leman and Gauss it to oblivion.
Next turn was even better though when I used the Apocalypse Mind in the Machine rule on the Bane blade and shoot the 12" Blast weapon at a group of 20 or so BA and kill all but 5 then shoot the Pylon at that very same baneblade and chain reactioning it into a fireball. The look on their eyes... priceless.
I do say that gauss weaponry has some power in this poll though since it can glance any armor your enemy can throw, as long as they survive to get in range that is...

IG, no doubt, the sheer amout of pain they can bring to bear at range is disgusting, a 50 strong platoon can mow down a trio of carnifexes in one phase with lasguns alone. and a single, lucky leman russ has enough guns to take out 2 dozen light infantry, or any tank up to and including a land raider.

I think you really need to read the Necron Dex then. Most of the Necron weapons are within a 24' range. We have VERY VERY few long range weapons. Necrons cannot outshoot IG.

I wouldn't say CANNOT, but it is difficult. I run 5-6x Ghost Arks screened by monoliths and they hold up pretty decently even to IG. Last tourney I ran em against a very typical leaf blower list and it came down to a handful of dice. (Turn 5 I was winning, Turn 6 I was losing, Turn 7 would of been a draw.)

Hormagaunts don't have a shooting Attack. Warriors are killed instantly by the plethora of strength 8 out there and most of their shooting weapons are sub-par. Zoanthropes get shutdown by anti-psyker powers, in addition to having to make 3 Tests, and roll 3 to hits etc etc.

I can't believe in any form or function that you think that Tyranids are the best shooting army. That's just ludicrous.

Tyranids aren't and never have been a heavily shooting oriented army. Tyrannofex's are hugely expensive for what they offer. Hormagaunts have no shooting attacks. Warriors are CC shock troops, their shooting attacks are basically bonuses and are never going to be a justified investment based on their shooting capability. Zoanthropes, while decent, are short ranged and have to pass an additional test on top of what most other units have to do in order to attack their foes, resulting in an 8.3% higher failure rate due to the chances of failing a psychic test.

Line up your shootiest Tyranids against an Imperial guard army and have them shoot it out, I'm fairly certain I can predict the outcome will not be in favor of the Tyranids.
