You should add Infantry Platoons to your IG section, as they are essential, especially to screen your Hydras. Also, plasma guns are extremely effective against many different targets; I highly recommend using them.

So far all my Infantry Platoons end up craping there pants and running away, and I don't want to by any more Commisars.
Plus tanks are easier to paint!

this is true XD
I couldn't paint faces for love or money. All end up looking nurgle-ish in the end >.< Hence my IG is all steel legion/storm trooper/krieg. Gas mask for the win!

The thing about the IG codex it that there are loads of diffrent ways to build your list. Personaly I like armour, whats not to like about tanks (and in my case stompy walkers that act like tanks). If you can think of it there is away to build it inthe IG codex.
As for the topic, I thought 1 HQ and 2 Troops was the must have units?

I just take em and throw them in a Chimera or Valk.
