And GW wants shooting stars - burn brightly, buy lots, then leave. Onto the next one.

It must suck to work in a place that makes you play games on the RoBB every time. It'd be a slow grinding down of your psyche I'd bet. You'd start seeing skull-pits and immovable hills in your dreams; they'd haunt you until they became nightmares. You'd wake up in a cold sweat screaming "I just wanna play in a cityscape!", but never quite remember why.

Uhh... Lenton. Where creative table-top dreams are crushed (and turned into Finecast).

As Someone who plays in a GW bunker, let me say that while most of the tables are ROBB, I have seen one skull pit in the entire store.

I like some of the GW terrain. It makes it easy for me to get up my own table at home. In fact, I own a bastion which I use along side my crashed Aquila Lander (Yah, remember that bad boy?) and my scratch built stuff. Works great.

I love GW terrain. I own heaps of it, and have heaps of it still unbuilt. Look what I got when Planetstrike came out, and that's not all the PS terrain I own.

But the RoBB isn't terrain. It's a surface. And it's a bad one. A limiting one. A one that is super-expensive and serves no purpose.

So that's why they decimated the SG ranges I wanted to use, thus forcing me to learn to sculpt to cover the shortfall - which all in all meant that when three years later their mickey taking reached new lofty peaks I didn't actually need to buy from them any more and could leave without regrets.

Wait... What?

WD is nothing more than an undersized and overpriced catalog. Its a big sales pitch... "this is what's new and this is why you should buy it. Look!-Fuuuuuuun!"

WD is pure dog-toffee. Our lass got me a sub for Christmas last year, so Ive read the last 12, and I wouldn't renew the sub if it was half the price!

I like painting guides/hobby stuff and battle reports, and they make up about 25% of it. The other 75% is shameless plugs and adverts.

Needless to say I told her never to get me another one as its a waste of money, and to spend it on something worthwhile, like beer or cigarettes.

I think this is where FLGS really come into their own as far as promoting the hobby goes. I have had the luck of never living near an actual GW store.

Things like terrain building nights and painting nights, really go a long way to fostering that sense of a community, and it does inspire people to pursue the Hobby side of the game.

Hell I really got into painting and modeling after not being able to get a game in for a few months. The painting and converting keeps me interested in it all.

As far as books go, I just cant justify paying out that much money when I can look stuff up on the interwebs and Dakka has been a huge resource for ideas and how-to's.

I would note in the interests of fairness that this month's WD has a range of painting articles for the Nid and Space Pup releases and the pictures in the Attack on Weathertop scenario are seemingly devoid of plastic kits (except maybe a few statues and pillars).

Beyond that, it's not over burdened with content. Kind of bemused to find no big battle report between the two release armies, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

See, I really enjoy the WD batreps with the interspersed fluff, why not do a wolves nids one!?
