Though I agree with you entirely in this instance, policies can change, and GW press statements are not given under oath. Genestealer Cults and The Lost and the Damned were both squatted long after the Squats themselves.

Genestealer cults and The Lost and the Damned never had a Codex and continue to not have one. Same with other campaign/WD lists.

By that rationale, however, the Squats never had a codex either - their only official lists were in White Dwarf (later collected in the Compendium) and the 2nd ed. "Black Book". My point was that both Genestealer and Chaos cults had officially published lists (respectively in Codex: Tyranids for 2nd ed. and Codex: Eye of Terror for 3rd ed.), meaning that both were "squatted" some years later than the Squats themselves, and making the studio's promises rather dubious.

Genestealer Cults was squatted at the same time as Squats, not long after (ie when 3rd came out).

I'm fairly certain that their statement of not retiring any current armies was after they made the Eye of Terror codex invalid.

Only 40k army in conceivably danger of being cut are SoB, and since they just an update we can safely say that won't happen. Everybody is safe.

And people thought the same thing about the Dark Eldar about a year before the release. Rumor was they were going to be killed off when their kits went off of the site for about 6-9 months before release.

At our GW store, tau are pretty popular. I see more Tau than eldar/ork/necron etc. If they just updated the suits and made them sexier, I'm sure the army would rocket up in popularity.

That's true actually, I heard some years ago that the Nid Hivefleets were on their way to Commoragh, apparently there was some top level decision about whether to go rejuvenate the range or let it die. It's funny to think now, but when I was at GW there was absolutely shed-loads of DE stuff in storage. A lot of it got given away as in-store prizes and bits for conversion days and other events. HQ didn't want the stuff back, but we were just told to 'get rid of it'.

The thing is GW will never again explicitly kill off a race - although arguably even with Squats that did not happen, just a single extremely condescending letter reply in WD from what I can remember (up until some years later when JJ wrote 'that letter'. What is far more likely (although I'm not saying this is the case with the Tau), is that like the Squats, Genestealer Cults and EoT book they will just be allowed to fade into obscurity until you can suddenly no longer buy the minis.

I don't think armies are ever unpopular. I think mini's are. Dark Eldar are pretty much the best example. I know its all a subjective matter of taste, but the old DE models were ugly as sin. The army faded into obscurity. GW releases some of the hottest minis they've ever done and BOOM, instant popularity.

I thought these vague "my uncle's barber's cousin heard... whatever nonsense..." threads weren't allowed to remain open in here?

Now we are already at 3 pages of nothing even though there is no news and no actual credible rumour.

A bit of hyperbole granted but seriously it's why i picked them up for my first army before going 180 on the grim dark and picking up BT for my second.
I highly doubt they'll be squated.

But then again I was excited about the jump to resin making my modeling easier and more afordable....

^ This.

Tau actually got me into 40k. They were more sci-fi than "gothic" and had very cool models and a cool story.

Personally, I would think that if they cut anything, it would be maybe merging unpopular marine dexes in to the main book, but I honestly doubt they would do that.

Tau actually do ok now, they are just VERY unforgiving due to the age of their book, but a good general can still win games with them.

TBD is correct. I just came in here to lock the thread, as it's been pretty well debunked.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1
