A friend of mine took a call at work from a guy named "Sweetmeat"

At work I get to hear a ton of unusual names for kids, I swear I am going to write a book someday.

Here are a few samples of names I have personally dealt with, what were their parents thinking?

Aryna, Breitling, Charmissa, Dadoren, Ellisen, Florine, Genesis, Hildebrand, Isa, Jessamyn, King, Liberty, Madigan, Ryguy, Scout, Tachika, Valentina, Waverly, Xavi, Yulissa, Zuzanna

And by far the worst of the bunch: Nevaeh

There really should be a test to see if people are qualified to raise kids.

I think Aryna sounds alright, but it is pretty late so my brain might not be getting some joke about it (if there is one).

EDIT: Just adding that I wouldn't personally use it, sounds too fantasy-ish for my liking, but as a name it's not wholly terrible.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. It's even worse here in Asia. It's become very fashionable among the Chinese to name their daughters things like - April, May, January, etc; Crystal, jade; Blossom, Daisy. I'm not sure whether it's to increase the attractiveness of their daughter to white men so they can get a trip to the first world, or whether they genuinely thing the names are aesthetically pleasing, either way, it's a bit of a disaster.

I think it's fair to choose a non-standard name, if it reflects your culture and heritage. Provided, that is, that it actually reflects your heritage. Being told by your grandma that her parent's came on a boat from Ireland doesn't make you Irish. It makes you a white person living a white person life, so give your child a normal name for feth's sake.

Newly invented names are always terrible. Always. Seriously, you're not a poet, so what made you think you could invent something that sounded okay? Nothing, which is why your child's name is terrible.

One of the two decent chapters in that whole book, the other being the chapter on average incomes among low level drug runners.

The baby names chapter was particularly good for asking the question on racism and names 'is it the implied colour of the name, or the implied social class' that stops the person from getting job interviews. That is, the trial sent out identical resumes for Michael and for Jezmai (or whatever)... but what if it send out resumes for Jezmai and for Cletus?

Well, I have no idea how I'll name my heirs in the unlikely case I ever have 'em.

So far, I run by my second name, Mathias, since my first name it's also my fathers and it's easy to avoid confussion. I actually always introduce myself as Mathias anyway.

Not a really common name, but never suffered 'cause of it.

You're a poet and I didn't know it.

But yeah, if you are, and you can actually fashion attractive sounding names go for it.
