A big problem with that is who determines that you are mentally handicapped? The state? I am sure that will go well....
Also mentally handicapped is a very broad. I have Asperger syndrome does this mean that I shouldn't own a gun?

At least for older guns, the automatic weapon laws should be relaxed. It's not like some guy is going to spend 30k on an MG42 to rob a convenience store.
Without the assault weapons laws an MG42 wouldn't cost $30k.

Having felony ban on gun ownership probably isn't bad either.
Though, who is going to determine "mentally unstable?'' This would just going to turn into anti Autistic nonsense. They probably still would, except for the .3 variant still being used. The whole thing about making them really expensive is really idiotic.

It is true. Blame John Howard for that.
I'll blame all Australians for electing the idiot.
Don't feel bad, we elected Obama. Everyone is entitled to some mistakes.

Why should they?
Because it's called "assault." Well, at least "police brutality." If you're acting legally, why should the cops be allowed to attack you?

Especially when you can get a perfectly servicable black market full-auto (although probably not an MG42) for $3-5k.

Well, I almost agree with you, but there needs to be an additional qualifier: VIOLENT Felony.
I don't think that bouncing a check on a day where the payee and local powers that be are in a bad mood should carry a lifetime penalty.

So again, kind of like now (except I think it is just a felony).

Yeah, definitely change it to violent felony.
