This Is my second attempt on a force Sword. My first attempt was on my Red Corsairs. They didn't turn out this well!

Hey Styro that sword looks amazingly good! simply beautiful and perfectly shiny! :-) not to mention how good that base looks with the lava! i like the way you focused on the cooling darker parts as opposed to what you usually see with the brighter look lava, it really is good painting dude I hope you can update again soon?

Thanks Nerd, I really like how the sword turned out as well. But i dont like the base, maybe because I painted it and I see it with different eyes. But if you think its good then it must be! lol. So I will continue with it.
Do you think the rock should get another highlight of light grey? and then the edges get a dry brush of yellow?

I can understand the lax updating since you bought a new toy! I know the feeling all too well! I've had a few 'toys' myself that have basically needed a credit card inserted into the fuel tank just to run ;-)

and I really like the base as it is Styro! no more drybrushing needed! the model on the base looks wicked and a few more done up would be epic!

So over the weekend while watching the Grey Cup... Arrrrrrgooooooos! I managed to try out some OSL on my paladin. This was my second attempt at it and I think I over did it. I found it difficult to keep the paint flowing steady and constant. I had the pressure low and opened the needle slightly to get a small stream going on paper. But when I brought it over to the model it would clog and i would have go back to the paper again. Eventually I got frustrated and you can see areas where I opened it up too much and the paint is thick in those areas. (orange on the shins and the blue chest part) I went back and tried to fix it. but I think I just made it worse. Anywho I think they look good in the photos at least.







Let me know what you think and any pointers and advice will be appriciated

PS i think I need to find a good tutorial on painting scrolls and books! mine could use some work

Ya your right. at least the right foot should have some orange. I dint even see that thanks. Most of the light come from below. so the tops should still be silver but the fron and outer edge should have some glow. As soon as I do the next Paladin I willl fix this

Yeah you did a good job styro, it's just a 'bit' much but like you said you had Airbrush issues! I totally know what you mean! they can be awesome but frustrating too! only thing I can suggest is a light reflection on top of his feet which would be a reflection of the glow that hits his upper shins? might tie it together that little bit for ya :-)

Thanks nerd. I'll do better next time. It just takes practice. I like the back of the Pally. It is what i was going for, sutle. I think I need to buy a new air bursh. Mine looks like its been through hell. It was a good starter brush. I just have to convince the Ol' Battleaxe.

Hey guys, So I have been out of the scene for a while. I havent even had a game in 6th ed yet.

So Yesterday I decided to pack up all my WH40K stuff. It took me over 4 hours.

On march 11th all my stuff will be going to a good home.

I get possession on March 11th.

It has a nice bedroom in the basement that Im going to make it my games room. There is enough space for a game table and my painting area.

My only problem is ventilation. There is no windows in that room. I might have to do the air brushing in the garage or laundry room.

But until then its all packed up and no updates for a while. but I will still be lurking.

congrats on your house too mate! best thing you can ever do! everything you put into it comes back 100 fold to you down the track! and the freedom of doing what you want with it is great too, only road block is all the things you want to do you can't because all your money is going into the mortgage lol

No not crates! too hard on the backside :-) beanbags as mentioned although a garbage bags filled with lawn clippings can work too ;-)

So I have a small update I know its been a while ... but hey I just bought a house.

So I set up a little painting area in the basement bedroom. it's not much but its a start.

I managed to get in an hour of painting and this is what I have so far:




Used my phone and I dont have a light box any more.. I hope to get that set up for the final shot.

Its good to be paint again. Let me know what you think of the OSL eyes and tips would be great.

Thanks Nerd. well the actual hour was spent on the details. I sprayed a few models before I moved, incl the tabbard and the gold.

All I did in this sitting was the eyes lol.

Now that I'm a home owner ... I wish I wasn't. I thought I had no time before ... boy was I wrong. Something always need to be done. housework, yardwork, gutters, clean out the pond...and everthing cost money.

It's the main reason I set up the desk, just to get a break or somewhere to hide from the 'old crow'.

Love the house, but it still doesn't feel like home yet. Too many empty rooms. I think we need to get a pet.

So I just bought a 16" light tent kit. It included everything in this photo


And after doing some test shots with my Red Corsairs I took these:

I have the exact same light box kit! :-) it's pretty good for the price i think, although I must have a broken one as my photo's never look that good lol! your shots are nice and i request you tell me how you take good shots!!

I know, lame answer but it is a very good read.

My camera is an old 5MP camera from the turn of the century. So nothing special there.
These are my first photos with a tri-pod. I was using a paint pot with sticky tac before. Ghetto. Tri-pod is 1000 times better.
Always set the white balance. You cant really do that with phones and most phones dont have macro .. soo dont use your phone.
Use the timer setting, it makes a difference when taking macros. Pressing the button to take photos moves the camera and blurs the photo. So set it for 10 seconds and dont touch anything... dont even breath. Take a few of the same shot and pick the best one.

lastly photoshop or some kind of editing software. Something that will autofix the brightness, contrast and colour.
Don't forget to crop. alot of people dont crop, 5MP is a huge. Crop the junk off the drawing. It will center the model and frame it. When you post a raw photo on dakka or anywhere it looks tiny and you cant see the details. Crop it.
Even after you do all that the Image size is still pretty big, Resize it. I usually shrink mine down to 800 pixels high. Although 600 is the best for forums.

Photos are time consuming but its worth it.

Thanks Styro, I haven't played with the white balance on my dslr yet, I bought a Cannon EOS400D a few months ago pretty cheaply and haven't been brave enough to fiddle too much :-) as far as editing goes i tend to crop in Photobucket when i upload them, do you know of any free programs i can do before i export them? I know, i'm a tight arse! but that's what happens as a home owner as i'm sure you'll attest!

I havent tried any other software. Photobucket has an edit program. I use that one when I'm at work. but it can be a bit buggy.

Vent recommends GIMP and Pix Resizer. I have never tried these but GIMP looks pretty good.

Setting the white balance makes a big difference. it clears up the orange or blue tint you get sometimes.
