I really don't see a lot of people using venerable dreadnaughts at all. you are paying 50 extra points for 13 front armor instead of 12, and the special rule that they get to re-roll incoming attack dice.
As for the thunderfire cannon, i really like the unit, it just doesn't fit into one of the conventional space marine builds, as it is more stationary. If they got some kind of AA round in the new codex they might be a must have in any list.

Venerable dreadnought is 60 more points, does not have 13 armor but instead has WS and BS 5 and the venerable rule.

Thunderfire cannons can be made to fit into a marine list quite nicely.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!
