To be honest, I've come to hate the word. It feels like a lazy way of engaging a piece of information so that you don't really have to, because its biased.

Its funny, because while it certainly plays into the Conservative persecution myth, both Left and Right think the Media is against them.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Saying the Media (whatever that is) is in the tank for Obama won't save Romney.

Am I the only person who thinks Game of Thrones is boring? After episode one its been kind of a slog except for the Dothrakians. Admittedly I am only in Season One but I'm not buying the other seasons at this rate.

Just watch the last 2 episodes of season two.

I have never bothered to watch GoT because I feel real history has so much drama in it there is no need to make up a fictional version.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I don't know if I can make it that far. Admittedly the opening theme is pure awesome though.

It seems to me this is a good way of never enjoying virtually any entertainment. How do you roll this way? Do you only watch documentaries?

It makes assigning any actual validity difficult, beyond a sort of gut feeling.

Here in the UK we have the BBC. The left wingers say that it's biased to the right wing and the right wingers say it's biased to the left wing.

When it's managing to piss off both sides you know it's running pretty much down the centre and the two sides just have an "If you're not with us you're against us" mindset.

Or it just represents the government's view.

Not really, the government gets all wound up about it too. There's Murdoch's gutter trash newspapers for putting forth the governments opinion.

BBC has always seems less sentionalist than CNN to me. They're not dependent on advertising revenue, are they?

Everyone pays a license fee, so no they don't rely on advertising revenue.

The BBC does have a habit of not reporting on certain things that the government might find really damaging, the doctors accosting the Health secretary recently and the current workfare issues, and it's coverage of the riots and the student protests was very biased. Stuff like this is also noticeably absent from the discussion programmes such as Question Time too. There is a view that this may have to do with the Director General of the BBC having a political affiliation but the current one isn't Tory so that can't be the whole story. I suppose the fact that the government signs off any rises or cuts to the license fee may have some bearing on it. Overall though the bbc is a great institution and it's mandate as a public service with a responsibility to "educate, inform and entertain" is brilliant.

The insistence of so many Americans that the BBC must follow the government line has never ceased to amaze me. They just figure it must, because their ideology says that's what happens, and they never seem to bother to watch the BBC to see if that's actually true.

The BBC, like our own ABC and many other media and non-media bodies around the world show that you can have a government body which is independant of government, that can challenge and control the actions of government within their mandate.

This is just a thing that's true, and easily observable, yet so many Americans insist it cannot be. Very strange.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

Maybe, but it's a pity that history classes do their best to make history boring.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Not nearly as much as I thought it would for an HBO series. Much less of that and general killage than anticipated. I am Disappoint.

I can't stand HBO but will buy a series if its decent. Tru Blood is favored viewing.

Just pointing out that this is blatantly wrong. My sister was born to US parents while in England, so she was born (and remains) a dual citizen of the U.K. AND the U.S. She is 30 years old.

This explains so, so much... (I would like that show more if I could just get past the damn switch blade sound that their fangs make...)

(it is a terrible, trashy show)

All entertainment isn't sub-mediaeval fantasy fiction.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but I like SF. I pretty much gave up on fantasy years ago.
