They're effectively pre-pubescent children when they are transformed into astartes. I assume that would have something to do with their ability (or lack of) to 'bump uglies'.
The transformation overrides puberty, so they develop differently to normal humans.

OFC they are fertile.
Its a wide-known fact where baby space marines come from, when an SM and SoB have children then if its a boy he joins the astartes and a girl the SoBs.

It goes witohut saying that Slaneesh Marines will have given it there best shot so if they were fertile we would have heard about it by now... damn meatbags shootind dna at each other to make babies... we necrons find that offensive!

Space marines may be fertile. They may not be. But one thing is certain. There is no time for bumping uglies when there are aliens and heretics to slaughter.

Also, the question of space marine infertility is completely pointless, when everyone knows the only women in the 40k universe are spacenuns and fleeing space elves. Makes me wonder, actually, if there is any area in the 40k universe where a "normal" family life exists. Like, a postman, or an accountant. Space accountant. *nod*

Majority of Imperial citizens have a normal life. I don't actually buy the idea that the Imperium looks as bad as it looks in Codexes, or as light-hearted as in the Cain novels - except for Death Worlds and frontier planets respectively - so I would imagine life is pretty normal for most people in the Imperium. Same goes for the Eldar. They probably aren't as utopian as they're made to sound, and I'm pretty sure most of them have a normal life as well in their ark ships.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

Wow, this thread went to the dark side rather quickly...

My interest was simple curiosity on a late night, after reading salamander fluff and I read somewhere they had families.

My own speculation on the matter would be that any offspring would be relatively normal. Maybe slightly stronger and faster than normal people, but not crazily so.

There have been amusing refrences in some books though. Like the first horus heresy book...

I think it was family in a figurative sense. They serve as a guardian/elder/instructor, or maybe it's the family they had before they became Astartes. Salamanders are the most Human Chapter, so I can't really see them becoming detached from their old families or even descendants (Astartes are supposed to be ageless, after all) of said families.

I recall having read that it's a Chapter tradition for them to sorta adopt a family and act as custodian for them. Don't ask me for a source, though, it's been years! Probably some issue of WD.

I could also simply misremember and it was just fan rumours like they get sold for fact a lot around forums like this one.

Alaitoc in particular is quite well described in the Path Of novels. Apparently the Seer Council has a rather hands off approach to governing the craftworld and you're mostly free to do as you please as long as you abide by the path. I think the reasoning is that the Eldar are well aware of how they're expected to behave and it is a way of life hammered into them at an early age. The other craftworlds as of yet though, remain mostly untouched on outside of the codexes.

And Tadashi is right, the Salamanders maintain contact with their prior families and often live with them when off duty. They and some of their descendant chapters are pretty much the only marines to ever do this.

Space Wolves no - recruits are taken from those dying in battle - Valhalla style. In the early days at least (Horus Heresey novels) they are very very inhuman in nature and would have nothing in common with their former families - might even see them as prey

They don't. The SW reside in the Fang, their fortress-monastery at the North Pole of Fenris, protected from the tectonic shifts and sea-storms that wrack the rest of the world by thousand-meter cliffs and unclimbable heights.

To the native Fenrisians, the Space Wolves are akin to warrior-gods. At best, a SW might have a family member who made it as far as Chapter Serf also residing in the Fang.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

As I've said before, they're a disgrace to the Imperial Truth and the old Imperium, and dangerous mavericks to the current one.
