The first sentence in the Gawker article attributes the quote to "The Telegraph". Two seconds of Google searching reveals the original source to be The Daily Telegraph.

So they just provided a link then? No they focused in removing context in order to slant the comments.

Come on give your brain a chance. The eventual source is not as relevant as the article itself which was heavily edited to remove context and reduce it to a race jibe. The Telegraph didnt do that, they highlighted the comment and considered it controversial, but left it in context; which is Romneys take on repairing the damage in relations between the US and the UK, not whether non-whites are acceptible presidents.

So the term WASP stands for White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant male.

So, I am going to show my ignorance; but are there Anglo-Saxons who are not white?

You're outsiders. That's the point of the acronym, to emphasise how the ruling elite of the USA come from a particular class.

It isn't as true now as it was 50 years ago. Bear in mind that Kennedy is still the only catholic president, though. Obama is the only non-white, etc.

Possibly, we don't know for sure. Medieval London was known to have blacks in the population, we don't know when the black community in London began, its very possible it arrived with the Romans. This could possibly make them 'Anglo Saxon' if they were part of the Anglo Saxon nations populations.

Neither is anyone else alive today, or for a coupple of hundred years - everyone is American, no matter the colour of their skin.
But dem blackz ar all muzlims so DAY EBUL!

I did.

And yet, given Romney's racist religion, belonging to a party that basically plays against xenophobic fears and oftentimes does racist things, and the fact that Obama is not white and has been repeatedly attacked for not being white, the connotation of the phrase is obvious.

But then again, I suppose you don't want my brain to work THAT much-- just want it to work just enough to agree with you, amirite?

If you changed Mitt Romney's nationality to Eastern European the press in the West, including the US would be denouncing him as a right wing, religious facist. Just look at the racisim noise made about the Euro's being held in Poland / Ukraine. Panorama had a report showing facist / racist behaviour going on at a handful of football games. However it's ok for one of the main political parties in the US to keep having a dig about his colour. On top of this you also had plenty of people interviewd during the election, and even now still, metaphorically spitting in his direction because he's black!

Any other country would be shunned for this behaviour and it just amazes me that you still get away with it on the world stage.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

No, they copied a story that had been posted on numerous other websites. Again, Google is your friend.

As I said above, Gawker is a crappy version of TMZ.

Orlanth wrote:

Dude, this is the internet. It takes less than 5 seconds to source anything you read, less when the source is given by the article in question, and less still when the quote is broken from the article.

Which, by the way, didn't reduce it to a race jibe.

Orlanth wrote:

Second sentence in the Telegraph article:

In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

Oh, and third sentence in the Gawker article:

When explaining why Romney would have a better grasp of the relationship between the United States and the U.K., the adviser had this to say—

ZOMG, so misleading! Well, to someone who doesn't actually read the articles being debated.

Agreed. Which explains my earlier post. Romney's entourage need to be extremely careful in what they say to who and how, so far they havent been.

I have no real critique of Gawker though here, the press is not expected to be neutral, and this gaffe was too good an opportunity to pass up.

The Telegraph makes the comments yes, but the article goes on a lot longer than that placing it in context. The context is mostly overhshadowed by the gaffe hence the article title, but still the Telegraph was fair enough to place the full context. It wasn't in Gawkers interest to do same, thus the article they wrote covers the gaffe and little else.

Longer doesn't mean "more context". You can place something in context without a jeremiad.

Funnily enough the world doesn't revolve around you. Open yourself to the possibility that when someone replies quoting someone else they might be addressing what someone else said.

Indeed, and unlike someone's heritage being in question, religion is always a choice.

If any of the Republican's crazy claims about Obamas heritage were true well, you can't blame someone for their heritage.

But you can sure as hell hold someone to account for the ridiculous belief system they choose to follow.

In all fairness, it's nearly impossible to find an issue that Mr. Romney doesn't support both sides of.
