Whatever way you look at it, the choice of Romney or Obama makes for sorry reading. If Reagan's corpse was wheeled out for the election, he would probably speak more sense, and do a better job than those two!

In my lifetime I've seen some grim times in American politics: Jimmy Carter's inaugaration speech, Hilary Clinton's hairdo, Michelle Bachmann starting a political advert by saying she is not a witch.... I could go on, but never before have I seen such insipid and uninspiring candidates. At least GW Bush had a past drink problem, and It was fun wondering if he would do a Boris Yeltsin whilst in office, but these guys are just dull.

In this case? Palestinian.

Mr. Sununu's father grew up in Palestinian Jerusalem, and his mother was an ethnic Greek born in El Salavador. Mr. Sununu himself was born in Cuba, though long before Castro's takeover.

Seeing as Mr. Sununu's father clearly had ties to the PLO, I find it absolutely disgraceful that Candidate Romney would take such a risk in exposing himself to the insidious Muslim takeover of our government.

Racism knows no national borders.

Obama lived in another country from the ages of 3-10. He's been living in America for more than forty years, since before he hit puberty. The idea that he has any lack of understanding of the American culture is one of the stupidest things I've even read from Sununu; and I'm from New Hampshire. I wish he would learn to be a decent human being. Failing that, he can keep working for Romney.

Jihadin wrote:"Be American" can only be white. Seriously......you actually think Romney thinks that?

I doubt that Romney is a serious racist. That being said, I would not be at all shocked or surprised if he grew up among a lot of racists, and would be able to comfortably pander to racists. To quote Brigham Young: "You must not think, from what I say, that I am opposed to slavery. No! The negro is damned, and is to serve his master till God chooses to remove the curse of Ham..."

The LDS church only allowed Black men to become priesthood holders (that is, adult male members of the church) in 1978. Romney was 29 or 30 years old when that happened. The church he grew up in did not allow black people to be equal members, based purely on their race.

Since he mentions America's connection with Anglo-Saxon heritage, does that mean that he believes a president of Slavic, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Italian, etc descent would not be able to "fully appreciate" America's relationship with the UK (even though the Welsh and Scottish and some of the Irish (thorny subject, I suppose) are also part of the UK)?

Not even going to dignify Sununu's nonsensical "HURR OBUMMER AIN'T GOT NO UNDERSTANDIN' OF 'MURIKA" drivel with a response.

Hell, if I'm not mistaken, at this point the majority of Americans are not of Anglo-Saxon Heritage. A very significant number are, but there are a lot more non-Anglo-Saxon Americans.

Is it time to bring back the term WASP? Haven't heard it in a while when it comes to political office.

I do realize that the person that said this might not have a racist bone in their body. But sometimes it is almost as bad when a person says something like this and doesn't realize or understand why it is offensive. That just shows how out of touch somebody can be.

Blacks in the LDS are still not equal members regardless of any policy changes. The doctrine and scriptures have not changed and they are still considered a cursed race.

On the eve of Mitt Romney's arrival in London, one of his advisers made a remark that The Telegraph says "may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity."
That's a fair assessment. When explaining why Romney would have a better grasp of the relationship between the United States and the U.K., the adviser had this to say—

"We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special. The White House didn't fully appreciate the shared history we have.

Obama, of course, has a different heritage, as his father was African."

This is only the latest dig at Obama's heritage by the Romney campaign.

Last week, Romney campaign co-chair John Sununu said Obama "has no idea how the American system functions, and we shouldn't be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia, another set of years in Indonesia..."

Sununu later added, "I wish this President would learn how to be an American."

Other than Nick Griffon and his cronies in the fringe fascist BNP party, I'm not sure anyone else in Britain would have been impressed with this nonsense.

Its not in the Gawkers interest to report what Romney's advisers said unembellished. To some extent this is their fault, spinsters ought to remember, perpetually, that is something can be taken out of context by one side or the other for partisan gain, it will.
Its not like Obamas advisors dont have to run the same gauntlet, they are just doing so better.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

The first sentence in the Gawker article attributes the quote to "The Telegraph". Two seconds of Google searching reveals the original source to be The Daily Telegraph.

I doubt he really thinks like that, he's probably just trying to have his team play dog whistles for the potential voters who are racist.

It's just that sounding dog whistles is a tricky game, and an easy one to screw up. When it is screwed up, you end up sounding stupid and racist, like this Romney staffer.

I know you really, really want to defend Romney, but that really shouldn't come at the expense of reading. The point in dispute here is not that there is, or isn't a special relationship, but that the special relationship is somehow better maintained by a person with less melanin in their skin.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Guessing this might be a gaff, perhaps he meant that he would focus on relations with the UK instead of other countries in the world. He was in the UK so of course he's going to play to the home crowd, have you ever been to a concert and had the band say another city was better than the one they were playing in?

American History:
1565- Spanish found Fort Augustine in St. Augustine
1605- French move to Port Royal after Saint Croix Island is abandoned.
1607- Jamestown(first permanent English settlement founded)
1614- New Netherland founded under Dutch
1619- First Africans arrive to North American colonies(30 arrive by accident, worked with other indentured servants and some gained freedom and later owned slaves)
1629- Scottish found Nova-Scotia
1638- Swedes found New Sweden
1640- At least one African sentenced to slavery
1654- First legally recognized slave
1784- First permanent Russian settlement in Alaska

Really good stuff all of this history, although one thing that can be gathered from American history is that people of British and Anglo-descent are really good at taking over land. They beat the French in a series of wars to take a good bit of French colonial territory and eventually took over the Spanish held areas on the mainland.

All candidates have faults and when it comes to religion that's all a choice. I recall a certain Reverend Jeremiah Wright who was a certain current president's spiritual leader by choice until election time. By the way the "Audacity of Hope" slogan came from the same pastor.

I don't know how to take this exactly, except to say thank God we're not a theocracy.

Like it's already been explained to Fraz, the problem isn't with talking about the special relationship. That stuff isn't just for the British audience, it plays really well with a lot of the American audience (which is exactly who they're really talking to, what with the election and everything).

The point is the aide saying the special relationship will be healthier under Romney, because the other guy is black.

Do you get that now?

Native Americans

Though America may have been founded on white migration from all over europe, you have a very heavily mixed population, most notably black, but also chinese/japanese, latino, etc...

I'd go so far as to speculate that the US has one of the highest black populations outside of Africa itself. To deny that influence on American culture doesn't make sense. Nor does it make sense for a nation which only exists because people immigrated from elsewhere to try and say 'you were not one of the awesome cool original immigrants so shut up!' Is pretty silly... Neither is anyone else alive today, or for a coupple of hundred years - everyone is American, no matter the colour of their skin.
