Tyranids.
Only a few tendrils have been encountered and destoyed and the codex seems to indicate that these tendrils were only forward scouts.
Unless all of the main factions (Humans, Eldar and tau) band together the future of the galaxy is looking pretty bleak.

Comparing the 'Nids now to the Eldar at their prime, though? The Eldar were known for supernovaeing stars for the sake of making pretty lights, I don't think the Tyranids would have an easy time against a foe that can turn every single star into a Hive Fleet-annihilating nuke.

strange why black fang was the greatest victory during the Emperor's reign then.... and Blackfang took on 3 primarchs, the emperor and 1000 custodes
But the beast is said to nearly destroy the Imperium of Man, you'd figure this fight would have been noted since it endangered so much even C'tan Dragon wasn't this bad though the Emperor did find himself pushed harder.
Then again, this is GW we are talking about... their fluffl is counter intuitive sometimes
The heresy was in M31, early on if I recall. Lasted less then a decade. So the Beast showed up a 1000 years or more after them Emp was a sitting on his chair and more or less dead.

The Old Ones were beating the Necrons so badly that it wasn't even funny, then the C'tan fethed it all over. What chance would the Necrons have without their precious plot devices?

With all of the new necron guns that weren't used against the old ones in th ffirst battles when the necrons were terrible, necrons could still beat the old ones. The doomsday cannon and death ray ar two examples that could be used to help the necrons. Irks would kill everyone no matter what happens.

From what ive read in the fluff it sounds like the emporer and the primarchs were an unstoppable force before the horus heresy. Defeating eldar and orks all across the galaxy. Granted that the orks and eldar were not at the hight of their power, still the IOM were fighting and driving back all non human species in the galaxy at the same time. So in a showdown where its every race for themselves that has to count for something.
Does anyone actually know how many necrons their are? Because it seems to me that if the answer about the same amount or more than the SM, then they are maybe the main contenders.
Even though there are so many orks in the galaxy can you imagine them coping with the high level of tactical warfare involved in having a lengthy campaign with the likes of horus, dorn and the emporer? If the orks could afford to be massacred at almost every turn then they could win. If therse no chaos involved then that makes warp travel easy, and gives a greater advantage to tacticians as well.

I shall go with the IoM, purely because if they turned ALL military might towards a single opponent at a time they could defeat any of the others, individually the Imperium is strong, however as a FFA, Necrons or Tyranids.
'Crons coz they aren't edible and 'Nids coz they eat everyone else and avoid the 'Crons. So in the end Nids vs Crons... Nids win through numbers if backed into a corner and forced to fight. OR the Nids just pack up and move their gak on once all the edible stuff is gone... so Crons by proxy I guess...

I highly doubt necrons have anything "new" in kingdom... this is just technology that should have been rendered motionless in ages past and then they arose. If I am wrong please feel free to site a reference.
