Is it just me or does Maggie Glyenwhatever face remind you of Kirsten Dunst.

I think the face shape is a little similar. Also similar - Kirsten Dunst can, at best, be cute, and she also has to work at it. She has dead, dull eyes.

Never been a fan on Anne Hathaway. She reminds me of my cousin, who reminds me of Rod & Tod Flanders.

And she was terrible in Batman.

It's interesting, I think threads like this go to show you that what comes to be seen as pretty is about a whole lot more than someone's face and figure. Lawrence and Hathaway are very pretty girls, don't get me wrong, but I think if we were to do a search of the 3 billion odd women on the planet and judged them purely on looks, I'm not convinced either of these women would be getting near the shortlist.

But they've both done, besides delivered good to great performances consistently, is picked their film roles very well. Lawrence has swung between carefully chosen commercial franchises (X-Men and Hunger Games) that have shown she can make good bank, and smaller films that have given her the freedom to show her acting chops (Winter's Bone, Silver Linings Playbook). Hathaway has done similarly, mixing more artistic fare (Rachel Getting Married, Brokeback Mountain) with commercial stuff (Dark Knight Rises. The Devil Wears Prada).

Point being, be pretty enough, talented enough, and pick the right film roles and the industry will be falling all over themselves to call you the prettiest, most talented girl in the world. And they'll keep doing it, until you pick a few too many stinkers in a row.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Lawrence was excellent in Winter's Bone (haven't seen Silver Linings yet), and perfectly okay in First Class and Hunger Games, but she's definitely still a kid. Part of why I haven't seen SL yet is because she at least superficially didn't seem mature enough for the role; her next to someone as old as Cooper seems a little off, but word is she did well enough for Best Actress, so....

Hathaway's been quite good for years. She's a more experienced actress and a grown woman. I find her more classically beautiful, even aside from my also having a weakness for women with a touch of crazy, which she does a great job portraying (Batman, Rachel Getting Married, Love and Other Drugs).

On a similar thought, I've often thought that if, say, Britney Spears or someone like that wanted to go shopping, all she'd have to do is remove her makeup, lose her entourage, and wear a t-shirt and jeans. I suspect a lot of these celebrities would be literally unrecognizable for who they are if they presented themelves without their trappings. Not all of them - Mila Kunis, for example, has both a very distinctive voice and eyes - but a lot of them could I bet.

She's wonderful in Silver Linings Playbook. Mind you, it's a film full of wonderful performances, with Cooper, de Niro and Jackie Weaving all deserving their nominations. At which point you wonder how much it's actually the director, especially when you consider that it's the same guy who got a genuinely good performance out of Mark Wahlberg in Three Kings.

Now Pfeiffer really does have that 'icon' factor I mentioned earlier. I saw an interview with her the other day and she looked amazing, the woman is near 60 and still a great beauty.

But my older woman category will forever belong to Sigourney Weaver, she was my first, crawling round on a bed gnashing her teeth in ghostbusters... I was not really sure why at the time, but I suddenly considered girls less annoying from that moment on.

With honorable mentions to Evil Lily from Legend and the Lady Jessica from Dune...

Ayah Sigourney Weaver, cute and creating the whole "action chick" thing. She's also really really tall.

Come on, man. You know how this works. That butt is getting +2 or +3 on the scale for being in a Catwoman outfit. Much like how some give +2 or +3 when a girl is a gamer.

And back on topic, they're both beautiful women. But my instincts tell me that Jennifer would probably be even better-looking in person. Meanwhile the reverse might be true for Anne.

Jennifer Connelly is a lovely lady, and in fact I'd definitely prefer her over either Jennifer Lawrence or Anne Hathaway.

My wife and I recently watched Inventing The Abbots, and I pointed this out, and my wife said there was absolutely nothing special about her, and I had awful taste. But she married me, so wtf does she know about taste.

Also, Inventing the Abbotts reminds me, Liv Tyler would trump all of the above in my book.

Yeah, I remember sitting in the theatre and scoffing at the gratuitious arched-back butt shot when she was on the bike. Seriously, that's weak and it looks like Anne Hathaway has the butt of a middle-aged woman.

I also scoffed at that scene, in the theatre. In fact, I got in a lot of trouble over that scoffing - the police were called, and now I can't go too close to daycare centers, if you know what I mean*.

Now I only scoff at home.

Hmm, the question of which actress any of us prefers to fantasize about is actually off-topic. This thread is about a large group of people hating Anne Hathaway. I don't think they hate her because she's not pretty or because she can't act -- because those are both obviously false. And at the same time, I don't think people like Jennifer Lawrence because she's pretty and she can act. There are lots of other pretty actresses who can act (like Anne Hathaway), after all.

The article's explanation is that Anne Hathaway's facial features will be better liked in "challenging" political, economic, and social circumstances -- and that she comes off as insincere. The first point strikes me as ... unfounded? The article itself certainly doesn't explain the evidence for such a claim. And the second point just makes me sad. Look at Anne Hathaway's answer to the journalist who asked about her being hated, where she uses this bizarre matter/anti-matter reference to make a point about optimism. I mean, that's awkward. If it was just a line, one would think she'd have a better line than that.

People say Jennifer Lawrence makes good acting look easy. I wonder if they have ever considered whether her down-to-earth personality is another example of good acting looking easy. To be honest, I think the real difference is that Anne Hathaway isn't just pretty; she's that kind of pretty that you have to be born as -- big eyes, fine bones, etc. I think Jennifer Lawrence's look comes off as a lot more attainable. Methinks the females have more reason to hold Anne's looks against her (and rationalize it as Anne not being sincere) than Jennifer's.

I'm not saying she isn't a tough beautiful broad.

I'm saying her brand of beautiful is more attainable than Anne Hathaway's.
