Well my most awkward game would have to be a fight breaking out in store over a rules argument. I wasn't part of the fight but the fact that there was over 6k points of models on the board between them 1500 of which were mine was pretty awkward. There's that uncomfortable silience that decsends when a fights about to happen we're everybodies just kinda staring at the two would be combatents.

Some people just don't know when to stop mouthing off I guess. Plus it's never a good idea to make an aggressive move at an Iraq war veteran. No harm done, we were able to calm everybody down with no damage to property or persons but still was way uncomfortable.

I know the feel. Not wise to do that to ANY Vet. Many of us are wired differently and perceive things with another explanation. And then again, some people are just too into a game

So, my wife has supported my hobby for many years now, the only caveat was that in addition to painting my own army, i make sure her space wolves are up to spec, and she occassionally brings them out for doubles matches when she insists on being on my side. she refuses to play against me, on account of she can never beat me, and she likes to be able to beat me at things.

So i'd signed up to a local tournament with my best friend, taken great care in selecting my army, and then the day before he comes down with the flu and is unable to attend. My wife says not to worry, she will go in his place so the entry fee isn't wasted (more an excuse to spend time with me i think).

The tournament went well for both of us, and we both have an impressive winning streak, but we then find ourselves, on the penultimate game of the tournament, on the same table.... since i was all for winning the tournament (and so was she) i ended up tabling her.... but it wasn't a pleasant experience during or after.

Played a bloke in our 40k league with my Eldar. We played a 1k point game, me Eldar, him Dark Angels. I stuck my Guardian squads with Starcannons in buildings. I was not prepared for Belial and the corresponding turn 1, no scatter Termies in my deployment zone. Consequently, perhaps due to the fact that my Wraithlord was in reserve, I was tabled in turn 4.

We felt a bit awkward after the game, thankfully it passed quickly.

I played a game with a guy who had really bad shakes. Not sure if it was nerves or a medical issue. He got first deployment, right before I deployed even one fig, He bumped the table, tripped, KNOCKED THE TABLE OVER and busted about 2k worth of Figs under a wooden table....I felt bad for the guy and yet awesome because not one ork was harmed.

I have yet to see a table flipped yet thankfully but i have seen dice turned into projectiles of frustration. 40k is a game that if you cant just laugh it off you will end up like ''that guy'' at the store.

Another story that I have is I was playing in a local weekly tournament. You met there and whoever had showed up and had payed earlier in the month played on another people could join in later too.

To make a long story short after about 3 weeks of playing (and playing the better players in the store. So there were no run away games) I overhear them totaling the points up for a game from a new guy that had joined. we were playing planet strike games that week. according to the TO the kid had scored 21 points in one game.....everybody else had maby 18-27 points after 3 weeks.

This kid had played somebody who wasnt in the tournament and was playing orks. Somehow he destroyed the objectives so the secondary was kill points.....how do you get 21 points of kill points?

I ended the tournament in 3rd to last because all of my games had been very close only netting me 2-4 points a week or a draw. this git played two weeks and came in 3rd.

It's hard not to feel sorry for a guy like that. He wants to live a normal, albeit geeky, existence and he can't even do that because of his disability. Hopefully something from that debacle wasn't broken.

I've never had a truly awkward experience in a gaming store yet, but I was playing a doubles game couple of weeks ago and kept rolling dice into my allies (completely unintentionally) extremely lovingly painted Marines, losing arms, pads, and heads. Suffice to say he was not pleased... and it kept happening.

My most awkward game was against a long time friend, he's actually the one who got me into the hobby. He's in his early 50's and an ex-military type who is obsessed with his Imperial Guard and only his Imperial Guard (namely his tank company.)

After a few weeks of discussion he sold me a necron army that his son (his painting/commission factory) had only put together but had no interest painting (this was 4-5th edition, so old limited crons.)

After striking a deal, we decided I should pit them against his armoured company (basically nothing on the table but tanks.), given the small nature of our local, he had never played necrons before and didn't know what to expect, he'd never even seen the codex.

Remembering that glancing vehicles to death was a preferable option in those days and Necrons being able to always glance on 6's, made this a relatively short game as my Necron army was just mass warriors backed up by destroyers and a few wraiths.

After the 2nd turn there was barely a tank capable of firing back let alone doing any damage, safe to say he lost his temper and feverently started flicking through the codex several times to ensure how gauss etc worked.

By the 3rd turn it was over, all that was left was 3 DF Wraiths chewing the back of a badly disabled Russ.

After the handshakes and humour, he was insistent on buying the army back after the 'impressive rules' and firepower.

Safe to say I didn't sell them back, but there was an awkward air around us the rest of the night, a few weeks later looking back we laughed about it, and even now remains a hilarious story between us.

on top of that I am 35 and if I wanted to play vs that age group I'd go play Pokemon. I quit playing magic at one store b/c all the players were 14 and under.

...... Anyway she got absolutely slaughtered. She lost interest and quit before the end. Now I look like the bad guy. Well I left with 1st place which was $90.00. she really assured -- it just didn't seem right.

I would rather play someone on my level than just go thru the motions of taking turns to just roll over someone. It also makes it not fair for other people at the Tournament on top of that.

Brutal.

I mean, not just that you tabled a newbie player like that but... totally brutal situation to be put in. I mean, yeah, you could throw the match, but that'd be obvious and she might get mad that you're letting her win... not to mention the fact that you're basically throwing a tourney but... also... you're being handed what is basically a free win in the tourney, so everyone who placed under you has that to throw at you forever.

Absolutely brutal.

Only awkward game was when I was teaching my son to play whfb and we were invited over to a guy's house I met at the game store. He was really nice person and a golden demon level painter.

We decided that my 14 year old son would play beastmen (6th edition rules) against his wife with her wood elf army. Now she is a very nice person also which just made matters worse. Everything just went perfect for my son and the poor wood elf army was just getting crushed due rolls and everything just going awry for her. My friends wife became very upset and started crying which was just horribly awkward for all of us.

I'm not sure why people take losses in Warhammer so personally. Had a chap in the game store who lost a necrons vs necrons cheesefest today and he was so utterly crushed. He took 40-50 mins to pack up his models while people were waiting for the table because he was utterly inconsolable.

I had something similar happen to me, though not quite as bad. A year or two back I had my Tau up against a 12-14 year old Marine player in a tournament. He basically made bad decision after bad decision, to the point where the only way for him to win would be to just stop shooting at the targets he fed me.
I even started telling him things like "If you move your captain out into the open i'm going to cook him with Shadowsun, so you should join him to the tac squad", or "your assault marines should be advancing, because they are still in range of my guns and cover isn't helping you at all". But he didn't listen to me. I ended up with a massacre victory, and getting no sportsmanship points at all.

The most awkward game I've played... is probably with my buddy against a 10-13 year old kid and his mother. My ig, my buddies Chaos and the kid was Grey Knights and she was Daemons.

Not only were her tits hanging out in person while leaning over the table, she was openly flirting with the both us and had converted slaanesh models that could have been in a porn store. This was coupled with how obnoxiously bratty the kid was.

I care. I put a lot of time and money into this game. I heard it's only a game again last night. I just don't want to play kids. I always win and it isn't fun. I also don't want to play cheaters.

I charged an Eldar transport w/ Eldrad and Fire dragons in it with 8 Scarabs. The transport was right on the edge of the board actually the fins were hanging off. No way they could have deployed. I didn't manage to blow it up (only wrecked it) even w/ 13 or so pens so he picks it up takes off the flight stand and sets the vehicle slightly to one side of where it was. All of the sudden there is room to deploy.

I said no way they could deploy. He says maybe but the Vehicle couldn't have any part off the board so he had to move it b/c it was an illegal placement. He also said some of my scarabs were under the transport and had to be moved b/c you can't be under the skimmer when it wrecks b/c he has to remove the stand. Then he started saying its only a game don't get so worked up.

The game before that one with him he had his Wolves w/o arms. I thought I had killed all the MLs so i didn't move my doom into cover as it 10 wounds and I thought he had only bolters left. He of course said the guys w/o arms were MLs and insta killed my Doom.

I really think I'll just refuse to play him.

Of course it's just a game. The amount of money you put into something has no bearing on its definition. People pump tons of cash into sports games of all time and its still a game. Just becuase somebody pays more than someone else doesn't give that person the right to be a tool.

As for the guy who had to beat a 12 year old girl that's ruff man. On the lighter side you gave your buddies joking matterial for weeks regardless of the out come. My group of friends loves to give each other consistent ribbing. We would have loved it if one of our friends was in that situation. You could play the guilt card for picking on a little girl or even better, hey you remeber the time you got beat by a 12 year old girl.

My most awkward game of 40k was also the game that to date has made me the most angry as well.

It was about about 2 years ago at a 2500 point team tourney event, 1250 per side with modified FOC. As an additional twist, teams were not made beforehand, but rather randomized at the start of the event.

I got pair with I guy I have previously been partners with and there were no issues there. I was play Inquisition Witch Hunters and he was playing IG so that worked out fairly well.

The problems started with a father and son that came as well. The father was in his mid 30's or so, but his kid was maybe10 at the oldest. They both brought Orks and the father had designed the lists as though they were going to be on the same team for sure.

So first issue was that the father demanded that he and his son be allowed to be kept together as a team. Now, our FLGS is a safe place and there is no where he could be where he could not see his son, but for the sake of avoiding any problems and given the age of the child, both the TO and store owner allowed them to be an exception. This was not a problem really with any of us actually playing in the event either as we're all pretty reasonable guys, but it was a sign of behavior to come.

Me and my partner get paired up with said father and son team first round. We made our way to our table and made out introductions. It was at this time that the father made it clear that he himself was still fairly new to the game and that this would be his son's first game or so. In a tournament event, with Orks. I sighed inside at the time, but still resigned myself to having a good game, winning, and helping my opponents at the same time.

Their lists were one of pretty much a Green Tide at 1250 with almost all 30 man units Boyz and a Warboss, and another of Nobs, Lootas, Stormboyz, and some more Boyz in a truck. They had somewhere around 200 models between the two of them.

Their lack of experience horribly showed in deployment. The father was directing most of it and kept changing his mind about where this unit of Boyz should be or that unit Boyz. All the while the son was just putting stuff on the table. I had to explain to them the concept of deployment zones to them and that they could only deploy in a certain space on their side of the board (Pitched Battle IIRC). Their deployment took upwards of 30 minutes.

I was still trying to be accommodating and understanding at this point, not wanting to ruin the whole experience for the kid and seem like a total prick to the father for doing so.

There Turn 1 movement phase alone took about another 30 minutes. This was also where their terrible deployment plans made things worse for them. Just as an example: The father deployed his Lootas behind a ruins instead of inside (which he could have done easily) and thus spent their first movement phase moving them into a better position that he instead could have just started them out in. And then I got to explain the wonderfulness of Difficult Terrain and how that effects movement distance and such as they were trying to move their full distance without rolling.

I really should have done something more at this point with the TO, as it was apparent that they didn't even have the basic rules of the game down.

This was further demonstrated when the father then tried to shoot the same Lootas that had moved previously in their Movement Phase in their Shooting Phase. I had to explain Heavy Weapons at that point growing slowly more and more aggravated with the game while still trying to keep face.

This continued for the whole 2.5 hours. We went second and only just barely got to our Turn 2. At that point I simply didn't care and just said, "Fine, you guys win." They made me reach my limit of patience and hospitality at that point.

The whole time, it was constantly explain or show in the BRB about how to play, or their own Codex for rules. The son was clearly not getting much fun out of the game either as he didn't understand the more nuanced aspects of the game and just wanted to move and shoot models. He would have been much better off playing with Green Army Men IMO. The father was also getting more and more agitated with me for actually *knowing* the rules or how to play as opposed to just rolling with whatever he and his kid wanted to do. This was a tournament still. He too would probably have been better off playing with Green Army Men now that I think about it. If it weren't for the fact that my partner is a very cool, laid back guy, I probably would've blown up more, but he helped keep me from doing so.

I strongly recommended to both the father and the TO that they would be better served being refunded their money and spend their time actually learning the rules and how to play, probably with some more casual games, than to continue to play in the tournament. The father was still getting angry at me for ruining what could have been a fun experience for him and his son.

Fortunately it did not come to fisticuffs. They ended up staying, but I was done with them and didn't care anymore at that point. That game had soured my mood for the day and made my other games less enjoyable overall to the point where I can't even remember them. I think the TO ended up giving both teams a Tie, but I already knew we were out of the running.

TL;DR: Guy and his son both new to the game didn't know the rules to the game with Horde Orks go first and made it so that time was called during my team's second turn.

There is a fine line between genius and insanity and I colored it in with crayon.

At the moment I'm tailoring a force to play a friend of mine, he'll be doing the same. It'll throw him a little bit of the game and vice versa but we always have a fun game. No fun tabling people in the first few turns.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

I played a young kid, roughly 12 or so when I was 16-17 and he had eldar. I also used eldar but for this game I was running Emperors Children so I knew his rules really well.

Turns out.....he didn't. I spent most of my time reminding him what things did and stuff because all he did was move forward, no tactics or nothing, and just shoot what he could at pretty much whatever was closest regardless of what little damage he could do.

It was daft because he'd added options to his list that he just never used which baffled me as to why he picked them. My younger brother was a year or so older and he understood after turn 1 what I was doing to help the other kid play abit and learn something but I couldn't enjoy it.

It was even more awkward when he had no models on the table by the end and I had to explain he'd lost....he just looked blankly and packed away.

Had to be when I was playing my Tau against a fellow at a FLGS, and his girlfriend was watching and giving moral support, she was kinda easy on the eyes and obviously did not really want to be there, but as the game went along I kept noticing her looking my way, and standing on my side of the table a lot.
She also was making unfavorable comparisons between our models, being pretty harsh on her BF's painted minis, and laughing when he was taking a beating. I actually felt bad for the fellow, even made it a point to compliment some of his better conversions and models, and disagree with his girlfriends opinions of them.

Really uncomfortable, and the guy even won the game, and his girl told him he got lucky!

And to add insult to injury a few minutes after he left, she came back in to "buy some dice" and offered me her phone number, seriously awkward game.

Good on you for dodging that. Action isn't worth having to deal with someone that doesn't know the first bit about respect.

Last year I went to a tournament with my son and one of his friends. I played well, winning 2 of my 3 games and the 3rd was a very close one.

We all kept track of the points accumulated and compared notes before the results were posted. I had twice the points they each had. The posted standings were quite a bit different though.

Out of 12 people I was listed in 11th place. The score listed bore no resemblence to what had written down. So, I asked the to what was up. He pulled the three sheets that had been turned in. Two of my opponents ( who came in together, both of whom I had beat. Badly. ) had changed the scores before turning the sheets in.

The correct scores would have placed me in 3rd place. I would have raised holy hell, except that 3rd was a pass to another tournament I couldn't go to anyway and neither of those "people" were in the top 3. Have to admit that I felt the entire day was a waste of time though.

I remember I had been playing tau for 1 months (now its been 3 years and am much wiser) and this kid who had just picked up a tau battleforce and built it asked me to teach him, I felt I couldn't say no so I did. He asked me about heavy support and I *facepalm* recommended skyfire as the best heavy support and VESPIDS, FREAKING VESPIDS as the best fast attack. I just felt so freaking stupid as I didn't know as much about the army either. Now I look back and realized I gave him the worst advice possible, I hope he didn't listen to me....
