I think the EU has turned into some sort of bizarro Taliban. Remember when the Taliban was in power and they use to put out lists of things they'd banned, often the most random stuff. The EU is a bit like that, picking odd things to get all bureaucratic about, a lot of them essentially unenforceable.

It's very strange.

Then all of those things will be banned, as they're not good for you. And then the fast food wars can begin, Taco Bell wins, and suddenly we're all living in the Demolition Man universe.

The harm/inconvenience is a new raft of legislation that has to be created and policed, demanding an extra lot of eco-unfriendly wastage of materials, to "solve" a problem that doesn't exist.

(I am a man who worries about the sugar wasted by serving in paper packets.)

exactly!

if we cant trust the people bringing us food/wine/olive oil to bring us what we paid for, that is a different problem from the packaging of the item, whatever it may be.

its a solution to a problem that does not exist,

just like with resteraunts substituting cheaper alchohols, sure opening the bottle at the table is all well and good, but if you only buy a glass they dont open a new bottle each time.

going from gallon resuable jugs to tons of tiny plastic throwaway cups is a step backward,

just properly punish those caught defrauding their customers and make some examples of them, may not be perfect, but its better then this "solution"

Cheaper wines are regularly served in place of better stuff.

Largely because of that, its common when ordering a good wine to open it at the table.

It is quite common in pubs to refill spirits bottles with cheaper alternatives.

TGIF just got blasted with that. Thats why I just go ahead and order sterno.

I quite like getting oil and vinegar in a bowl, it's part of the setting. Was this issue really so big that officials thought it needed to be legislated at the European level? Surely something like this could be done by individual countries if they wished, and the fact they haven't says something about just how big an issue it is globally.

The EU should stick to addressing things like managing fish quotas and pollutant emissions, things that we all have to manage together and which affect businesses across counties. Tinkering with the way Tapas bars serve olive oil just makes them appear like interfering bureaucrats justifying their existence rather than being useful.

You don't get it. the EU bureacracy can now add 5, 10, 50 new bureaucrats now. You have to have inspectors, guys who write up the regs, guys to review the regs, guys to review the guys who review the regs, etc. etc.

I just thought of how this could affect Americans...

I had Mexican for lunch, and when we arrived they brought us a bottle of salsa (refillable) and chips... What if they regulated that Frazz, we'd be doomed! D: Surely war would ensue.

I've had it brought to the table in somewhat of a carafe before being deposited into the bowl also brought.

It's not like they set down a bottle of Pace Picante sauce, they set down a basket of chips, 2 little bowls (that look like a stone mortar, but are plastic), and then they set down a glass bottle filled with salsa, they leave the bottle at your table and you pour it into the bowls.

Edit: Carafe sounds better, but they look like this:

When you think about it, all food should be brought to the table live and cooked in front of you after genetic tests to prove it is pure.

You don't pay for olive oil. That's the point. (Or rather, that's why there isn't any point in this idea.)

That's an awfully dramatic quote for a thread about the proper packaging for olive oil.

And if it was such a big issue why hadn't the olive oil and restaurant industries attempted their own solutions? If brand management were such a concern, then premium olive oil companies would make their own little tamper proof bottles, and if customers were demanding premium oil then restaurants would want to open tamper proof bottles at the table.

That such things exist for wine, but not for olive oil indicates this isn't that much of an issue. And if it were then industry should sort it out.

Yes, definitely yes.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
