In some fluffs a marine is pretty much Kratos on steriods. Now, as we all know, heroes become exponentially more powerful whenever a fellow hero dies (Hollywood physics). It works something like this:

If we reduce the total marine population to one marine, his power will be approximatley 1,000,000! (one million factorial) times more powerful.

The humble Imperial Guardsman. Alone he is nothing compared to the horrors he faces, but when shoulder to shoulder with a thousand of his comrades nothing can hold back the Guard. To his left are 500 men, to his right 500 men. Behind him are tanks and artillery (and a commissar for good measure. If you want your men to charge a terrifying enemy, place something scarier behind them), and to his front are the worst horrors imaginable. But he does what he knows he must, and that's hold the line even if he has to die.

All that because he firmly believes in what he fights for. Faith now a days is figurative and moral but in a world where demons and Gods are actual tangible things, something as simple as Human faith is almost mandatory to survive. Go ahead, try and find all the atheists in the IoM haha.
