Well, Cadre + 12 Firewarriors and a Riptide are almost perfect as allies.
39 S5AP5 shots each turn counters the BS3, that are still 20 S5 hits for only 160 or so points.
Even outside RF-range that comes down to 13 S5 hits, there isn't much that survives that.

Including an unkillable MC that shoots down everything with 2+ and flyers is just extra tears in the eyes of your opponent.

I play Necron and their biggest weakness is 2+, for only a few points I can totally ignore that weakness.

How does it really take that long? I don't even understand how you could draw that conclusion. Yeah Tau are a shooty army, but that doesn't mean they have more guns somehow than what any other army could field. They don't really have anything that could really draw out the shooting phase than just trying to pick target priority, which should have been decided during the deployment phase.

And really that would imply that it's not fun to face orks when they are rolling 18 handfuls of dice.

It isn't fun to face orks.

It is for me and most of my opponents, at least you're still killing Orks, Guard, Cultists, or Tyranids by the bucket load even if you lose.

I agree, horde armies are almost always fun to play against, especially if you yourself have an elite army. Makes for an excellent "cinematic" 40k moment to stave off hordes of gaunts or boyz while the bodies pile up. I think if more Tau players tried to use the mobile and aggressive parts of the codex instead of castling all the time the army would be seen in a less negative light.

I would beg to differ when i first started playing 40k my first tounament match was against green tide at 1500 points. Do you relize at that point lv orks can bring so many bodies they actually cant fit them on their starting zone. When you are playing an army and you relize no matter how many you kill there is no way you can win IT IS NOT FUN. Iended up killing close to a hundred models but he still one that was not fun it was frustrating as heck and i hate playing ork players to this day, I will of course still play them to be nice but only if they promise not to scream waghhh like a jack @#$ yah i hate that aspect of most ork players.

There is a thin line between being able to shoot too many down and not being able to shoot enough down.
And I think that's the main problem in balancing 40k: What do you balance around?

-Horde in cover? They will get annihilated if they don't have cover.
-Horde in the open? You will get annihilated if they do have cover.

Orks would probably bring more Nobz or Bikers if they didn't die so easily.
Why bother bringing Nobz with their W2 and all their durability when you blast them away group by group?
Why bother bringing Bikers with 4++ if all your weapons ignore cover and you can ID them?

Stuff like that is what you get when you bring Riptides with S8AP2-Large Blasts, it's the only way of even having a chance!

I dislike Tau because I like my tactical decisions to mean something. I like to think that cover is useful, not just something that makes him pump his BS slightly less.

Against a Tau army I might as well just ignore any cover on the field - I'd move faster and it won't make a difference to his shooting anyway.

That's dumb. Don't bother trying to justify it - you won't be able to. And stop it with the "weak in CC" justification - that's like saying Genestealers suck because they can't shoot. You're good enough in other areas that you don't need to care about CC.

I can't stand Tau because half of their book is how to break the game. Snapfires? we can do that at full BS. Overwatch? everyone can get in on it. Playing against Tau is an excercise in tedium. It's not even fun.
