Let's leave the anti WoW talk on this one please.

The sad truth is Blizzard/WoW didn't need to do anything to harm WaR, Mythic did enough of that by themselves.

I don't play wow, I don't even like wow but one game is shutting down one game isn't one game makes mucho money, one doesnt.

WAR had lots of opportunities to be a great game but failed.

I HATED the fact the Paul the developer did like 80% of the voice overs and they were all the same.

Lazy developing.

Aye, at times I felt the development of WaR, was more about whathisface's trousers that week, than the actual game.

No, I'm not saying it is GW's fault. I played WAR from pre-release until I saw numbers start to drop off. I had a great time in the game - it was fun and when I got bored with my Witch Elf I went and rolled a Warrior Priest. The warrior priest was still some of the most fun I've had in an MMO and I've been playing them since EQ days.

I'm simply saying that if you were to tell me that it was GW's license fees that finally put the nail in the coffin, I wouldn't be surprised.

Edit: If Mythic has just made WAR into DAoC2, everything would've been golden.

Talking with a friend this morning that deals with EA. EA didn't want to deal with a licensed game at all, regardless of the fee. That an additional number of people that were needed to deal with GW and get approval for any new material was too much overhead. Then again, this is EA we're talking about. The license renewal may have been a convenient excuse to finally pull the plug on the game.

And agree on what Mythic should have done, all my DAoC friends were wanting DAoC2, not WoW2.0.

Or it might simply be that GW and EA both realized the game was a bust and in a particular genre that is inundated with new releases and has a stagnant "ruler" in the form of WoW.

The fact that DAoC is no longer around while WoW is should tell you exactly how companies are going to go.

Until WoW is dead, there will be no real "innovation" in MMOs.

Ahem, I think you'll find that was a hijacked thread about something else WoW related. Also that was ages ago, the subs news has come out since that was locked.

However lets drop it now and get back on topic. Like I said anyone wanting to chat about the fails of WoW go open a thread in Video Games.

I bought the game on release and couldn't get past level 20 - the PvE was horrendous (I know it wasn't the focus, but it was just lazy).

The whole time I kept comparing the game to WoW because it was almost identical in many ways - the problem was it was a cheap WoW clone.... so I'd rather just play WoW.

The PvP was fun for a while, but if you are grinding from level 1-40 by just playing the same battles over and over... well it just gets boring. I quit after 3 months because I was just rerolling all the time.

Uh.... DAoC is still around. http://www.darkageofcamelot.com/

Unless you meant "DAoC is no longer very popular", in which case, you are correct.

As a big fan of the genre and someone who keeps tabs on it regularly, I think we finally are starting to see some innovation in MMOs, especially because it finally seems that publishers and developers are no longer trying to "kill" WoW.

Fond memories of WAR up until about the late 20s and then it started to go pear for me.
Was playing a dwarf priest and oh boy was the solo levelling hell on earth. Akin to resto druids during WoWs release.
Each mob would take forever to kill. Teaming up with an aoe damage dealer helped somewhat but still a grind.

The early battleground pvp stuff though was excellent imo, some great maps and objectives in each battleground.
They didnt maintain that level Im afraid as things went on, again akin to Arathi Basin in Wow VS later BGs such as SotA etc

Its a pity its closing for those that are left playing and still enjoy it.

A lot of wasted potential, I feel their release a month (?) before WoW Cataclysm didnt help much either, always wondered did the publisher force that through on the development team.

Gosh got like a million different things to say on this one.

The fact that they managed to screw up a warhammer based MMO is just mind boggling. Warhammer is probably the only major intellectual property out there that can legitimately and justifiably support 3 sided conflict. So of course what did they do? Make it 2 sided, of course!

Combine that with game engine issues and bugs as well as serious balance issues. Oh and don't forget let's try to ape World of Warcraft as much as possible.

This game was pretty much dead in the water as soon as it started. There are several reviews and commentaries on line from people who have worked on this project that all admit that there were problems.

I had several collectors edition boxes, 1 each member of my family who was playing. I got sick of looking at them about a year ago and threw them out. I did keep the little miniature though.

I haven't played WAR for a while, but I was there pre-beta, and now it's sad to see it go. How fun wasn't it to run a perfectly balanced destro warband of 24 into a blob of 100s of pug and solo order players, and just stomp the crap out of them... AoE dmg, group heal and guard was way OP, but meh, still fun. :p

I really enjoyed it while I was still playing. I think I ended up quitting for other things(including finishing school) before it got too bogged down with bug hell, but I really enjoyed what parts of PvP I got to take part in. Even more so, I LOVED getting to wander around and explore and fill in my Tome of Knowledge. I remember at one point wandering into a weird corner of a zone and finding a lvl 50 Chaos warlord dude Npc standing in a cave. He promptly killed me, but I liked knowing that I'd found some part of the Tome of Knowledge that might come in handy later.

Really great game visually and thematically, whatever problems it may have had. I'm sad I never really got to dungeoncrawl through Mount Gunbad before I quit playing my orc.

Me too! I bought the CE for this and the mini, never installed the game. Maybe I'll check it out for the final month the servers are alive. It's a really good book though, way better than the WoW CE books.

If we wanna turn this into a party-wake... I remember when I first got that whirlwind/vortex thing for my zealot... I think they changed it at least 3 times in the short time that I played, but pulsing out a omnidirectional mini-punt every second for six seconds was *hilarious*. Then you did the breath attack knock back. At some point, I stopped doing dps, I stopped healing... I just tossed folks around, it was glorious

I think the worst part of Runepriests was that while every other healing class had damage talents and healing talents, Runepriest talents were instead organized by single target/over time/aoe. So instead of improving your damage overall for solo play, you improved a single category of damage, and the same category of heals. So you couldn't HoT yourself and spam the enemy, because one or the other would suck.

Wildstar looks mostly good, I just wish they'd dump the planned battlegrounds and arenas and instead focus solely on Warplots and open world PvP.

Arena PvP has a strange tendency to delude developers into thinking their game can be an esport. It also attracts the kind of players who scream and whine about "carebears" while sitting around in the capital waiting for a queue to pop.

I don't see the point in playing a progression based roleplaying game like it was a first person shooter.

I enjoyed it several years ago. Wish I was still playing but things change. Too bad, it was a decent game back then.

I would be upset had I worked on a character just to have it wiped! Oh, well, delux version bought, I have some cool books and a decent Orc model. Nice to have played it and to have seen the world of Warhammer animated.

I liked WaR the most of all the mmos I played. Played a dwarf ironbreaker.

Had to stop playing right around the time slayers came in, but never had a problem with the game itself.

I probably enjoyed my Warrior Priest more than any other class I have ever played in any other game. Was just so fun running around smacking things with a huge hammer.

Unfortunately, as the problems became more pronounced, a lot of the fun was sucked out of the game, and people began to play it less and less. Add in guild drama and a lot of people left because of that too. It's a shame because if more effort had of been put into this game, it would have been really really good. I loved the look of a lot of the different classes, and they had a great feel to them. I really liked the White Lion, it's just a shame they were not so great to play.

I think that they should have designed a PvE world, and then added battlegrounds and the like to that instead. As it was, it was a kind of half-and-half mishmash, not being good at either.

It's too bad. Wish I could have a single player version to use somewhere. I did enjoy the community quests quite a lot too, especially when you teamed up to take down giants and the like. Very fun.

The problems are that Mythic screwed the game over post-release instead of polishing it. This caused a massive haemorrhaging of subscriptions, which in turn led to server closures, which led to EA pulling the plug since it's a licensed IP. EA is also notoriously eager to pull the plug on it's MMOs.

Conversely, my Everquest characters are a thing that still exists after more than 13 years, due to EQ being owned by Sony. Similarly, and despite the drop in subscription numbers, I can't see my World of Warcraft characters going anywhere for at least another decade, despite some being almost 11 years old already. ....Holy crap.

It's been years, but I think my character was... a Shaman? I dabbled in a lot of classes just to see how they started out, but that was the only one I got high enough to get his mount (a wolf, as I recall?).

It had a really interesting mechanic for a 'healer' where the more you healed the better your damaging spells where, and vice versa, so it made for a fun back and forth in the pvp instances where I'd heal/buff my crew, throw down some pain on someone in the area, and go back to healing away. It was a nice balance of things to do that I never felt like I was just heal-bot'ing for everyone else, even if that's mostly what I was doing.

Then again, I enjoyed healing in WoW battlegrounds too, so maybe it was just the right mix to keep me entertained.
