The big issue comes from the fact that you don't want to give too many of these abilities out as it would simply curbstomp DoC in general as our ward saves are really our only form of protection outside of Plaguebearers w/Regen and a couple crappy armour saves on Bloodcrushers, Drones & the chariots.
Only the Khannon sports a decent save, while our characters have only a 16% chance to gain a 2+ armour save.

If you ran MSU Daemons, would you just keep your characters cheap and accept it when they bite the dust, or get some gifts and hope for the best, then?

Non-Nurgle Heralds in general should not take Gifts as it's just a waste of pts due to the frailty of our rather expensive characters.

Keep in mind that in the current climate with the over popularity of HE's, WoC and likely DE's, we're in a horrible spot right now since all three of those armies are better at combat and magic than we are.
MSU is going to be all about out maneuvering your opponent and winning the chaff war. This is hardest vs. High Elves as they have the best chaff & chaff removers in the game right now, on top of their moronically OP combo's of Alarielle/Banner of Averlorn with or without the WorldCrutch Banner. (god forbig you fight the Alarielle Light Coven army...)

To be fair, I think a match-up between High Elves and Daemons is doomed from the start. Against most armies, the Banner is a good buy; basically MR5 plus a few other bonuses. But against Daemons, it's just comically broken.
If I were running Daemons at a tournament, I'd just hope to face High Elves only once out of three rounds. Not much you can do, there.

Honestly, in a tournament you should always be expecting to see the ultimate in gouda... Thus, I likely wouldn't bring MSU Daemons as the Nurgle list w/double Khannons is simply head and shoulders beyond anything else we can field.
And with High Elves being so damn popular right now, I think as Daemon players we should be building lists designed around combating their stupid crutches... (ie: 2x chaff Beasts + 2-3x 5-strong Furies + regen'ing Plaguebearer brick w/WS10 Herald + 6 Beasts of thumping & double Khannons to neuter any Frostchickens)
At worst the HE player tables you like he's honestly expected to. At best, you can keep things close and perhaps ruin his shot at getting Best General! (at which point most HE players it seems start whining about how unfair our book is and than Khannons are the broken things in the game... or at least, the ones I know do!)

In a friendly/pick-up game, unless the HE player is honestly wanting to test out their tourney list, I'd simple refuse to play against them if they're bringing out the banner on anything more than 6 DP's.
If they show up for a so-called friendly with an Alarielle Light Coven army of doom, I'd be tempted to table-flip their army across the room and call it Khorne's Wrath for being such a weedy little donkeycave.
