While there are many permutations, most of them vary from others in very minor ways. Being under the banner of a single organization for a thousand years had its effect. Early Christianity was very diverse, but that diversity died out under the Ecumenical Councils. Even the Protestant Reformation was a lot less about theology and a lot more about conduct. A Baptist and a Catholic still have almost everything in common with one another as far as faith is concerned, and aren't really comparable to the divide between, say, a Sufi and a Shi'ite.

Can you imagine the outcry if the Inquisition was resurrected and nary a peep from the Vatican (or even leaders from Chrisitian countries)????

Probably has to do with the news usually portraying events in a negative manner (how often do you see a news piece on something positive and I don't understand how anyone can watch that stuff without getting horribly depressed) and that they can choose who and what they cover so it

fits nicely with it's own biases.

Islam has very formal schools and branches.

I agree with that... but, it ain't like "all western church comes from the pope".

Besides... the Chrisitian faith had their Renaissance (and some say it's still happening). When is it Islam's turn?

Islam had its ' Renaissance before Europe, WTF did you think Europe got the science from. For a lot of the middle ages islamic society had a much more even keel for non-islamic peaople lioving in that society. Also Islam has alwqays had a divorce part of the contract. Women could own property.

Because Islam is less centralized looking for ques in its development like in Christianity won't work. But many different kinds of Islam exist. Shia and Sunni are kind of like Catholic and Nestorian. It's just that there aren't any Nestorians left, while there are plenty of Catholics. Catholicism survived the trials of time while other major doctrinal derivatives did not. This didn't happen to Islam.

Ahmadiyya and Sufism are two lesser known Islamic branches, but there are sub-branches as well, the most famous being the Twelvers and Wahabis. There's a whole list here. We have very few Muslims in the West, so we're unfamiliar with the development of the Islamic faith (I know generic stuff, but I couldn't tell you jack about Islamic sects like I could Christian). That doesn't mean their development is less than other religions.

Your formal schools and branches are the same as christian schools and branches, except there is no formal heirarchy to hold it together.

Terrorism is not the sole preserve of Muslims.

Terrorism tends to be the preserve of groups who lack the funds, numbers and organisational structures to fight a conventional war to achieve their objectives.
